Chapter 1 - THE QUESTION THAT SILENCED CHICAGO|

“Which hand did you use?”
Roman Vale's question drifted across the ballroom with almost frightening calm.
Ethan Crowe stared at him.
“What?”
Roman didn't repeat himself.
Three hundred guests stood beneath crystal chandeliers, their champagne forgotten, their attention fixed on the confrontation unfolding near the center of the room. The orchestra remained silent. Even the waiters had stopped moving.
Claire Whitmore pressed a hand against her injured cheek.
She had spent five years learning how to survive humiliation without letting anyone see the damage. She had smiled through Ethan's dismissive introductions, endured his mother's comments about her background, and swallowed her anger whenever his family treated her business as an amusing hobby.
She had never imagined that he would strike her in public.
“You don't get to threaten me,” Ethan said.
Roman tilted his head slightly.
“I asked you a question.”
“And I don't answer to you.”
“That depends.”
Ethan forced a laugh.
“Are you seriously getting involved in a personal argument?”
Roman glanced at Claire.
“Was it personal when he hit you?”
Claire swallowed.
“No.”
Her answer surprised Ethan.
He turned toward her.
“Claire, don't start.”
She looked directly at him.
“You already started.”
Madeline Voss tightened her grip on Ethan's arm. Her white dress glittered beneath the chandeliers, and the emerald ring on her finger caught the light.
“Mr. Vale,” she said sweetly, “I'm sure you understand that people sometimes lose their temper. Claire has been harassing Ethan for weeks.”
Roman looked at her.
“Harassing him by requesting payment for a completed contract?”
Madeline's smile faltered.
“How would you know about that?”
“I read the gala's financial brief.”
Claire blinked.
Roman continued.
“C.W. Atelier delivered the event according to the contract. The Crowe organization missed the payment deadline. The outstanding balance is four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”
Ethan's face hardened.
“This has nothing to do with you.”
“Your company is negotiating a property transaction with mine.”
That sentence changed the atmosphere.
Several executives exchanged startled glances.
Vale Meridian had been considering a partnership with Crowe Development, a deal that could rescue Ethan's company from mounting debt. Everyone in the room knew the negotiations were important.
No one had expected Roman to connect them to a slap.
Ethan straightened his jacket.
“Whatever you think you saw, this is a family matter.”
“Then you should have kept your hands off a woman who was working.”
Roman finally turned to the event director standing nearby.
“Please call the medical team. Preserve the security footage. And make sure no one deletes the original recordings.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You can't do that.”
Roman looked at him.
“I just did.”
Claire felt someone place a clean napkin beside her. A female staff member quietly offered her water.
Roman didn't order Claire to leave. He didn't touch her without permission. He didn't announce that he would destroy Ethan for her.
He simply made certain that the room could no longer pretend nothing had happened.
“Claire,” he said, “would you like to make a formal report?”
She looked at Ethan.
His expression had changed from anger to disbelief. He had expected tears, an apology, perhaps another attempt to explain herself.
He had not expected her to consider her options without looking to him for permission.
“Yes,” Claire answered. “I would.”
Ethan laughed nervously.
“You're going to ruin your own reputation over this?”
Claire's voice was quiet.
“You ruined your reputation when you decided I was someone you could hit.”
The medical team arrived. Roman stepped aside while they examined her, remaining close enough to help but far enough to respect her space.
Then his chief operating officer approached and whispered something in his ear.
Roman's expression changed.
It was subtle, but Claire noticed.
“What is it?” she asked.
He looked toward the stage, where a large screen displayed the names of the gala's principal sponsors.
“Your company isn't the only one the Crowes owe money to.”
He paused.
“And someone has been using your company's name to authorize payments you never approved.”
Claire stared at him.
“What?”
Roman took a folded document from his executive.
“Someone signed your name to a contract involving Vale Meridian.”
Then he looked toward Ethan.
For the first time that evening, the younger man looked genuinely frightened.
May you like
Because whatever had happened between Claire and Ethan tonight, the slap was only the beginning.
And the person who had forged Claire's signature might have been standing in that ballroom all along.
