Chapter 4 - The Week Before the Crash

Richard found the old legal file at 2:13 in the morning.

Harrison Hale had died eighteen years earlier, two years after Claire disappeared.

Richard had never cared much about the inheritance documents.

By then his own company was thriving.

His father's money seemed irrelevant.

Now every page mattered.

The will had been amended six days before Claire's crash.

Richard read the clause three times.

If Claire Bennett Hale survived Harrison, twenty-five percent of the Hale family trust would eventually pass through her to Emma.

If Claire predeceased Harrison, that portion reverted to Harrison's other surviving child.

Evelyn.

Richard sat back.

"No."

The word came out as a whisper.

His sister had inherited approximately eighty million dollars because Claire was presumed dead.

But motive wasn't proof.

Richard called Samuel.

At three in the morning.

Samuel answered immediately.

"Sir?"

"I need everything from the week of Claire's accident."

"What everything?"

"Phone records. Maintenance records. Security logs. My father's calendar. Evelyn's."

"That's twenty years ago."

"Then start digging."

The next morning, Claire woke from a nightmare screaming.

Richard ran into the hospital room.

"Claire!"

She was sitting upright, shaking violently.

"Car."

He sat beside her.

"What about the car?"

"Someone was there."

"At the accident?"

She pressed both hands to her temples.

"I can't..."

"Don't force it."

"Rain."

"I know."

"A man."

Richard's heart started pounding.

"What man?"

Claire shut her eyes.

"I don't know."

The monitor quickened.

A nurse entered.

Richard stepped back.

"I'm sorry."

Claire reached for him.

"Don't go."

He immediately took her hand.

"I'm here."

After the nurse left, Claire whispered, "I wasn't alone."

Richard stared at her.

"What?"

"Before the crash."

"Someone was with you?"

"No."

She struggled.

"I stopped somewhere."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"There was a garage."

Richard's blood ran cold.

Claire opened her eyes.

"Someone had my hood open."

That afternoon, Emma searched through boxes from her grandparents' estate.

She found photographs.

Receipts.

Old letters.

At the bottom of one box was a service invoice.

Hale Automotive Services.

Date: two days before Claire's crash.

Vehicle: Mercedes S-Class.

Customer: Claire Hale.

Repair: Brake inspection.

Emma immediately called her father.

"Dad?"

"What is it?"

"I found something."

Within an hour, Richard was sitting across from a retired mechanic named Frank Dorsey.

Frank stared at the invoice.

"I remember this."

Richard leaned forward.

"Why?"

"Because your wife was angry."

"About what?"

"Somebody had tampered with the brake line."

Richard stopped breathing.

Frank continued.

"She brought the car in because the pedal felt soft. We found a loosened fitting."

"Did you report it?"

"She told me not to."

"Why?"

"She thought someone in the family was trying to scare her."

Richard's jaw clenched.

"Did she say who?"

Frank thought.

"She mentioned your father."

"My father?"

"Not exactly. Something about money. She said she'd discovered something she wasn't supposed to know."

Richard looked at Emma.

"What did you do to the brakes?"

"Fixed them."

"Then why did they fail two days later?"

Frank's face changed.

"They shouldn't have."

Richard stood.

"Who knew the car had been repaired?"

"The person who paid."

"Claire?"

Frank shook his head.

"No."

He pulled the invoice closer.

"Your family's office paid it."

Richard stared at the old billing code.

E.H.

Evelyn Hale.

That evening, Richard confronted his sister.

She lived in a Beacon Hill townhouse filled with expensive art and silence.

Evelyn opened the door.

"You shouldn't be here."

"Why did you pay Claire's repair bill?"

She went pale.

Richard held up the invoice.

"Two days before her crash."

Evelyn stepped backward.

"You've been digging."

"Answer me."

"I handled family expenses."

"Why were her brakes tampered with?"

"I don't know."

"Why did you tell me to look at Father's will?"

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"Because I'm tired."

"Of what?"

"Living with it."

Richard's anger disappeared.

Fear replaced it.

"Living with what?"

Evelyn sat down.

For the first time in Richard's life, his older sister looked fragile.

"Father hated Claire."

Richard knew that.

Harrison had thought Claire beneath them.

A schoolteacher's daughter marrying into an old-money family.

"He thought she was turning you against him."

"She wasn't."

"I know."

"Then what happened?"

Evelyn started crying.

"Father found out Claire had discovered he was moving money through shell companies."

Richard stared.

"What?"

"She threatened to tell you."

"So he tried to kill her?"

"No."

Evelyn shook her head violently.

"No, Richard. I swear."

"Then who touched the car?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"Your initials are on the invoice."

"Because Claire called me."

Richard froze.

"Claire called you?"

"She was terrified."

Evelyn wiped her face.

"She said somebody had loosened her brake line. She begged me not to tell you because you were closing the biggest deal of your life and she didn't want you distracted."

Richard remembered that week.

His first major acquisition.

Claire had kissed him before he left for New York.

"Go make us rich," she'd joked.

His chest tightened.

Evelyn continued.

"I paid for the repairs quietly."

"Then why didn't you tell me after she crashed?"

"Because Father threatened me."

Richard's face hardened.

"With what?"

"He said if I dragged the family into scandal, he'd destroy you financially."

Richard almost laughed.

"He couldn't."

"Back then, he could."

"Why mention the will?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Because Father changed it after learning Claire knew what he'd done."

Richard whispered, "So he benefited from her death."

"We all did."

A silence fell.

Then Evelyn said something worse.

"But Father wasn't the last person to see Claire before the crash."

Richard's pulse stopped.

"Who was?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"Your business partner."

Richard stared.

"Thomas?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Thomas Mercer met her that night."

Richard thought of the man who had helped him build Hale Global.

The man who had stood beside him at Claire's memorial.

The man who had held two-year-old Emma while Richard could barely stand.

"Why?"

Evelyn looked terrified.

"I don't know."

Richard did.

Because twenty years ago, Claire had hated Thomas Mercer.

And now, for the first time, Richard wanted to remember why.
