Chapter 7 - The Vance Inheritance

Across town, in a penthouse stripped of its usual staff, Harlan Vance paced before a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that no longer felt like a symbol of success but the bars of a gilded cage.
His phone buzzed relentlessly — creditors, lawyers, reporters. He silenced it and turned to his wife, Cordelia, who sat rigid on the edge of a white leather couch, still in yesterday's dress, now released on an emergency bail hearing but stripped of her passport.
"This is insane," Harlan snapped. "One waitress. One night. And Calloway brings down everything we built in fifteen years?"
"You don't understand who he is," Cordelia said, her voice hollow. "I asked around this morning. Royce Calloway isn't just money, Harlan. He owns pieces of the police commissioner, two city councilmen, half the downtown real estate board. He built an empire out of nothing after someone left him for dead in an alley seven years ago. People say whoever saved him that night became the only soft spot he has left in this world."
Harlan's face went pale. "And we just handed him that soft spot on a silver platter."
A knock interrupted them. Harlan's assistant entered, ashen-faced, holding a tablet. "Sir... the board just voted to remove you as CEO. Effective immediately. They're citing 'reputational liability.'"
Harlan snatched the tablet, scrolling through headline after headline: VANCE LOGISTICS COLLAPSES OVERNIGHT. ASSAULT SCANDAL TOPPLES DYNASTY. WHO IS DELLA MARSH?

Cordelia buried her face in her hands. "We need to apologize. Publicly. Beg if we have to."
"Beg?" Harlan laughed bitterly. "Royce Calloway doesn't want an apology. He wants a funeral for everything we are."
