The Groom’s First Lie

Chapter 04 - The Groom’s First Lie

Lily wanted to leave the ballroom alone, but Ethan followed her into the marble corridor. Behind them, Malcolm’s security team tried to keep guests from streaming into the lobby. Ahead, Eleanor waited beside a private elevator that required an old brass key rather than a card.

Before Lily stepped inside, she turned to Ethan. “You knew my mother had a connection to this family.”

Ethan looked toward the closed ballroom doors. The practiced confidence was gone. “Three months ago, I found a photograph in my father’s study. Henry was standing beside your mother. You were in the picture too.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I asked him about it. He told me Nora had tried to manipulate Henry and that the family paid her to leave. He said bringing it up would humiliate you.”

Lily gave a bitter laugh. “So you protected me by letting me marry into a family that erased my mother?”

“I was afraid you would think I was using you to repair something I didn’t understand.”

“You were afraid I would cancel the wedding.”

Ethan did not answer. That silence hurt more than a confession.

The elevator doors opened. Eleanor stepped inside, but Lily remained in the corridor. “Was the photograph the only thing?”

Ethan reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope. It had been folded so many times that the edges were soft. Inside was a copy of a letter from Henry to Malcolm, dated two days before Henry’s death.

If anything happens to me, Nora and Lily must be protected. The hotel shares assigned to the worker trust are not to be transferred. Nora understands the plan.

Lily read the lines twice. “You carried this to our wedding?”

“I planned to confront my father after the honeymoon. I told myself one more week wouldn’t matter.”

“One more week always matters to the person being lied to.”

Eleanor watched them with sorrow but did not interfere. Ethan’s eyes filled, yet he did not reach for Lily. “I love you,” he said. “But I failed you before I even became your husband.”

The honesty did not repair the damage. It only made the damage visible.

Lily entered the elevator. Ethan started to follow.

“No,” she said. “Not until you decide whether you came here as Malcolm Whitmore’s son or as the man who promised never to hide the truth from me.”

The doors began to close. At the last second, Ethan placed his hand between them.

“I’m coming as the man who is ready to lose everything except the chance to make this right.”

Lily let him enter, but she did not take his hand.

Far below the ballroom, the East Wing waited in darkness.
