Everything Had Begun Before Ryan Carter Realized His Wife Was Never Running Away

Emily ended the call before the person on the other end could answer.

That was intentional.

She didn't need instructions. She only needed proof that the signal had gone through.

Ryan reached the driver's side window and slammed his palm against the glass.

"Emily! Open the door!"

She didn't even turn her head.

The engine started with a quiet hum.

Evelyn hurried down the front steps, struggling to keep pace in her designer heels. For the first time since Emily had known her, panic showed through the older woman's carefully controlled expression.

"What did you do?" Evelyn shouted.

Emily shifted the car into reverse.

"I finally stopped protecting you."

The sedan rolled backward, turned smoothly through the circular driveway, and disappeared beyond the iron gates before either of them could reach it.

---

Neither Ryan nor Evelyn spoke for several seconds.

The mansion, so often filled with staff, music, and conversation, suddenly felt impossibly quiet.

Ryan's phone vibrated.

He ignored it.

Then it rang again.

And again.

On the fourth call, he answered.

"What?"

His chief financial officer didn't bother with greetings.

"Ryan... every operating account has been temporarily frozen."

Ryan frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm looking at the banking portal right now. Our credit facilities are suspended pending compliance review."

"That's impossible."

"I wish it were."

Ryan's confidence faltered.

"Who authorized it?"

"I don't know."

The call ended before Ryan could ask another question.

Another notification appeared.

Then another.

His assistant.

The legal department.

The board secretary.

Three lenders.

Two overseas partners.

His phone seemed unable to stop ringing.

Evelyn watched his face lose color.

"What is it?"

Ryan looked at her.

"I... I don't know."

But deep inside, he already did.

Emily.

---

Across Beverly Hills, Emily drove without music.

Her shoulder burned where the crystal glass had struck.

Each time she gripped the steering wheel, pain traveled through her arm.

She welcomed it.

Pain reminded her she was moving.

She stopped at a red light and looked into the rearview mirror.

The bruise on her cheek was darker now.

The small cut on her lip had dried.

For years she had hidden those marks with expensive makeup before charity galas, business dinners, and magazine interviews.

Tonight she left them uncovered.

Her phone vibrated once.

One new message.

Everything has begun. Proceed to the safe location. Do not return home.

There was no signature.

There didn't need to be.

Emily deleted the message immediately.

Then she drove toward downtown Los Angeles instead of the apartment Ryan believed she would run to.

If he sent people looking for her, they would search every familiar place.

He still didn't understand.

May you like

Emily had spent months preparing for the moment she finally chose freedom.

And tonight was only the first move.
