đŹ PART 2: "The Woman Between the Graves" - Full Story
The man stopped breathing.
The silhouette moved slowly through the fog, blurred at first, then clearer with every step. A womanâs shape. A familiar posture. The tilt of her head he had not seen in years but had never forgotten.
His lips parted.
âNoâŠâ
The little girl stood beside him in silence, the ribbon and ring still resting in her palm.
The woman stepped closer.
Her face was pale from the cold, older than the one in the photograph, but unmistakable.
His wife.
Alive.
His knees almost gave out beneath him.
âYouâre dead,â he whispered, tears already filling his eyes. âThey told me you died.â
The womanâs face crumpled as she came closer through the mist.
âThey wanted you to believe that,â she said softly.
His grief turned into shock, then anger, then something more broken than both.
âWhy?â he asked. âWhy would you let me bury you in my heart?â
She stopped just in front of him, trembling now.
âBecause if they knew I survived, they would have killed her too.â
She looked down at the little girl.
The child stepped closer to her side without fear.
The manâs eyes moved between them, trying to catch up with a truth arriving too fast.
The girl lifted the ring again.
âShe kept this for you,â she whispered.
His wife nodded through tears.
âShe saved me when I had nothing,â she said, resting a shaking hand on the little girlâs shoulder. âAnd when I couldnât come back⊠she became the reason I stayed alive.â
The man stared at the child in stunned silence.
âWho is she?â he asked.
The little girl looked up at him, calm again now, but no less haunting.
For the first time, her voice sounded less eerie and more fragile. More human.
âShe said you would ask that.â
The womanâs tears spilled faster.
Then she reached for the girlâs hand and answered him with a voice that barely held together.
âSheâs our daughter.â
The manâs whole body went still.
The fog moved around them.
The crows had gone quiet.
