đŹ PART 2: "The Wife He Thought Was Dead" - Full Story
The man stood frozen.
The woman by the playground covered her mouth when she saw him.
âAnna,â he whispered.
Mia looked between them, confused and scared.
âMom?â
Anna walked toward them slowly, tears already running down her face.
âI told you not to open his wallet,â she said softly.
Miaâs lip trembled. âYou know him?â
Anna stopped a few feet away from the man in the blue suit.
Her voice broke.
âHeâs your father.â
The man nearly dropped the wallet.
âNo,â he whispered. âThey told me you died in the crash.â
Anna shook her head.
âThey told me you did.â
The truth landed between them like a wound reopened.
Mia clutched her red bucket tighter.
âWhy didnât you find each other?â
Anna looked down.
âBecause someone made sure we didnât.â
The manâs face hardened through his tears.
âMy mother.â
Anna closed her eyes.
âShe came to the hospital after the accident. She told me you were gone. She said if I wanted my baby safe, I had to disappear before your family took her.â
The man covered his mouth, shaking.
âFor seven years, I visited an empty grave.â
Anna sobbed.
âFor seven years, I raised your daughter beside a lie.â
Miaâs eyes filled.
âSo I have a dad?â
The man dropped to his knees in front of her.
âYes,â he whispered. âAnd Iâm so sorry I wasnât there.â
Mia looked at him for a long moment.
Then she reached into her red bucket and pulled out a small toy ring.
âMom said my dad gave her one like this.â
The man broke completely.
He pulled both Mia and Anna into his arms, crying into the family he thought death had stolen.
