đŹ PART 2: "The Mother Waiting Outside" - Full Story
The man followed her eyes to the parking lot.
A dark car sat near the curb with its hazard lights blinking faintly in the rain.
The girl held the babies tighter.
âMom said not to tell,â she whispered. âShe said if they found us, theyâd separate us.â
The officerâs face changed.
âWho would separate you?â
The girlâs voice broke.
âEverybody.â
The man in the suit stood slowly.
âTake me to her.â
Outside, the girl led them to the car.
Inside, a young woman lay across the front seat, pale and barely conscious, one hand still wrapped around an empty baby bottle.
The girl pressed her face to the window.
âMommy, I got the milk.â
The man stopped breathing.
He stared at the womanâs face.
Then at the tiny silver necklace around her neck.
âNo,â he whispered.
The officer looked at him.
âYou know her?â
The manâs hands began to shake.
âThatâs my daughter.â
The little girl turned sharply.
âWhat?â
His eyes filled.
âShe disappeared six years ago. Her mother told me she ran away because she hated me.â
The girl shook her head.
âMom said Grandpa never came.â
The man covered his mouth as the truth hit him.
His ex-wife had lied.
To him.
To his daughter.
To these children.
He opened the car door and touched the young womanâs face.
âMaya.â
Her eyes barely opened.
âDad?â
The little girl started crying.
The officer immediately called for help.
The man turned back to the child and gently took the milk from her shaking hands.
âYou donât have to steal food anymore.â
She looked at him like she didnât know how to believe safe words.
âWhat about my brothers?â
He looked at the babies, then at his daughter fighting to stay awake.
His voice broke.
âTheyâre coming home with me too.â
