đŹ PART 2: "The Money His Mother Hid" - Full Story
The teller slowly looked from the money to the boyâs face.
âWhat man?â
The boy tightened his fingers around the zipper.
âThe one in the black car.â
The bank lobby seemed to grow quieter.
A security guard near the entrance stopped moving.
The teller lowered her voice.
âWhere is your mother?â
The boy looked down.
âAt home. Sheâs sick. She told me if she didnât wake up, I should bring this here.â
The tellerâs face changed.
This was no longer strange.
It was dangerous.
She gently reached into the bag and saw a folded envelope sitting between the cash stacks.
On it was written one word.
Please.
The boy whispered, âShe said the money isnât ours.â
The teller opened the envelope with shaking hands.
Inside was a photo of a woman standing beside a wealthy man, both looking terrified.
And behind them, half-hidden in the picture, was the bankâs own chairman.
The teller covered her mouth.
The boy looked up at her.
âMy mom said he stole it from people. She cleaned his office. She found the bag.â
The security guard stepped closer.
âMiss, should I call someone?â
The teller looked toward the glass offices upstairs.
The chairman was standing behind the railing, staring down at them.
His face was pale.
The boy noticed him too.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
âThatâs him.â
The teller quickly pulled the boy behind the counter.
The chairman began walking down the stairs.
The boy clutched her sleeve.
âPlease donât give me back.â
The teller looked at the child, then at the bag of money, then at the man coming toward them with a smile that didnât reach his eyes.
She pressed the silent alarm under the counter.
Then she knelt beside the boy and whispered, âYour mom was right to send you here.â
His eyes filled.
âWill she be okay?â
The teller looked at the envelope again.
