Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of the CardsWhile Clara was resting in the safe, warm embrace of the hospital ward, the legal and financial gears were beginning to turn.

With Sarah Chen’s help, Clara took her first real step toward independence. Sitting up in her hospital bed, she called her bank's fraud department. She reported the unauthorized charges her mother had made for the Florida rental car, the luxury resort deposit, and the prepayments.

Because the account was solely in Clara’s name, and she had been hospitalized at the time the transactions were executed, the bank was cooperative. Within two hours, Clara’s debit card was officially frozen, and a formal fraud investigation was opened against Eleanor and Richard Vance.

Next, Sarah helped Clara draft a formal email to her manager at the logistics firm, explaining the medical emergency and providing the official hospital documentation. Her manager’s response was immediate and filled with relief: "Thank God you're okay, Clara. We were worried when you didn't show up. Don't worry about work. Your position is secure, and we'll handle your medical leave under the company's short-term disability policy."

Meanwhile, fifteen hundred miles away in Destin, Florida, the storm was about to hit.

Eleanor was standing in the lobby of the beachfront resort, her designer sunglasses resting on her head, her hand holding a tray of colorful drinks. Richard and Leo were waiting by the pool, their skin already turning a pink, sun-kissed shade.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Vance," the front desk clerk said, his voice polite but firm as he slid Eleanor's card back across the counter. "The transaction was declined. The card has been flagged as stolen by the cardholder."

Eleanor’s face flushed red under her makeup. "That is ridiculous! It is my daughter’s card. She authorized us to use it. Run it again."

"I cannot do that, ma'am. The account has been frozen, and our system has been flagged to notify the authorities if we attempt to process any further charges. You will need to provide another form of payment for the remaining balance of your stay."

"Richard!" Eleanor screamed, storming out to the pool area, her face contorted in a mixture of rage and humiliation. "Richard, get up! Clara froze the card! She’s trying to ruin our vacation!"

Richard stood up, his brow furrowing as he checked his phone. "My card is near its limit, Eleanor. I told you we should have used our savings."

"She’s doing this on purpose!" Eleanor hissed, her fingers trembling as she dialed Clara’s number.

The number you have dialed has been blocked by the recipient.

"She blocked me!" Eleanor gasped, her voice rising in a screech that made the other resort guests turn to look. "That ungrateful, manipulative little snake! How dare she do this to us? After everything we've done for her!"

"Mom, what about the rental car?" Leo asked, his voice suddenly high and nervous. "If the card is frozen, they’re going to take the car back. How are we supposed to get around?"

"We are going home," Eleanor declared, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, toxic fury. "We are going back to Columbus, and I am going to teach that girl a lesson she will never forget."

They packed their bags in a frenzy of anger and resentment, their luxury vacation cut short after only forty-eight hours. But as they boarded their flight back to Ohio, they had no idea that the house they were returning to was no longer theirs to control.
