Chapter 39 - The Photograph

The photograph of Abigail accepting Noah’s rabbit appeared online within forty minutes.

SECRET SIBLINGS UNITED IN MERCER FORTUNE WAR.

I wanted to smash the phone.

Abigail did something worse.

She read the comments.

By the time we realized, she had scrolled far enough to see strangers calling her illegitimate, greedy, hidden, dangerous, tragic, lucky, manipulative, and rich.

All before dinner.

She handed the tablet back without expression.

“People hate me.”

“No,” I said. “People are talking about a version of you they invented.”

“That’s hate.”

“Sometimes.”

She looked toward Noah, who was stacking blocks.

“Do they hate him too?”

“Some people say ugly things about anyone they can’t reach.”

“Why?”

“Because distance makes cruelty cheap.”

She thought about that.

Then asked, “Did they do this to you?”

“Yes.”

“Because of him?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me differently after that.

Not warmly.

Recognizing.

Eli traced the photograph angle to a neighboring property rented two days earlier.

The renter used fake identification.

But the payment card had once been connected to Wren Maritime.

Marcus denied involvement.

His lawyer called it a setup.

Ruiz agreed it could be.

Then a second photograph surfaced.

This one was older.

Lydia holding infant Abigail.

Marcus standing behind her.

His hand around Lydia’s wrist.

Not violent at first glance.

But Lydia’s face told a different story.

Eleanor went white.

“I took that.”

“When?” I asked.

“The day Lydia told him she was leaving.”

The image came from Eleanor’s sealed archive.

Meaning someone had breached more than the Hale estate.

Her former office backup storage had been accessed too.

By whom?

The answer arrived through bank logs.

A private investigator named Silas Creed had rented a deposit box near Eleanor’s bank years ago.

He had ties to Marcus.

And to Evelyn Cross.

The old networks overlapped again.

Ruiz found a record of Creed billing both families at different times.

“What exactly does he do?” Grant asked.

Eli read from a background summary.

“Corporate intelligence. Reputation containment. Witness location. Quiet leverage.”

“Blackmail,” I said.

“Professionally phrased.”

Creed became the missing connector.

The person who could have known Lydia’s secrets, sold them, preserved them, and revived them.

Police located his office empty.

Shredded files still warm in the machine.

One hard drive gone.

But a paper ledger remained.

Initials.

Dates.

Payments.

One line made everyone stop.

L.A.M. - containment, 12 yrs.

Lydia Anne Mercer.

Twelve years.

Before Grant.

Before Noah.

Before Vivienne.

The nightmare went deeper.

Eleanor whispered, “Marcus hired Creed when Lydia was pregnant.”

Ruiz turned the page.

Another entry.

E.C. - archive acquisition.

Evelyn Cross.

Then another.

M.C.W. - subject relocation.

Marianne.

One man had served every side.

Grant’s face hardened.

“So Creed knows where everything came from.”

“Probably,” Ruiz said.

“And where Marianne got the forgery material.”

“Yes.”

“And who ordered the photo leak.”

“Maybe.”

Then Eli found the last entry on the page.

N.M. leverage scenario - pending.

Noah Mercer.

My hands went cold.

Whatever Creed had been doing was not finished.

And beside “pending” was tomorrow’s date.
