Chapter 6 - The Secret Eleanor Buried

No one spoke for nearly a minute.
The police car disappeared through the gates.
Daniel slowly turned toward Eleanor.
“What did she mean?”
Eleanor’s hands trembled.
Claire had never seen her look so old.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
His voice sharpened.
“No vague answers. No protecting people. What did she mean?”
Eleanor sat down.
Claire stood beside Daniel.
Eleanor looked at her younger son.
“The man who raised you was your father in every way that mattered.”
Daniel’s face went blank.
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No.”
Eleanor swallowed.
“Your biological father was someone else.”
Claire stared.
Daniel took a step back.
“You’re telling me Dad wasn’t my father?”
“He was your father.”
“Biologically.”
“No.”
Daniel laughed once.
It contained no humor.
“When were you planning to mention this?”
“I wasn’t.”
“Great.”
He walked toward the window.
Claire stayed silent.
This was his grief.
Eleanor continued.
“Your father and I had been separated privately for several months. Nobody knew. During that time, I became involved with a man named Samuel Bennett.”
Daniel turned.
Claire blinked.
“Bennett?”
Eleanor nodded.
Samuel Bennett had been one of the original investors in Mercer Holdings.
His family still held minority shares.
“He died before you were born,” Eleanor said.
Daniel stared.
“And Dad knew?”
“Yes.”
“And he stayed?”
“He loved me.”
Daniel looked away.
Eleanor began crying.
“He loved you before you were born.”
“So Thomas knew?”
“No. Not until shortly before he died.”
Daniel faced her again.
“How?”
“Thomas found an old legal file.”
Claire began to understand.
“The trust.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Thomas learned Daniel had a potential inheritance through the Bennett family.”
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“I don’t want another inheritance.”
Eleanor almost smiled.
“Neither did Thomas.”
Samuel Bennett had created a trust for any biological descendants before his death.
No descendant had ever been publicly identified.
If Daniel could prove paternity, he might have rights to assets worth tens of millions.
Vanessa discovered the same file.
Suddenly her obsession with Daniel made even more sense.
If she could destroy Daniel’s marriage and position herself close to him—or manufacture evidence of a relationship—she believed she could gain leverage.
Claire shook her head.
“So the bedroom wasn’t only about breaking us up.”
Eleanor looked ashamed.
“No.”
“It was about creating scandal.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
“How long have you known she knew?”
“I suspected after Thomas died.”
“And you let her stay here?”
Eleanor flinched.
“I thought keeping her close would make it easier to watch her.”
Daniel’s anger erupted.
“You used our home as a trap?”
“I was trying to protect this family.”
“She drugged me in my own kitchen!”
“I know.”
“She threatened my unborn son!”
“I know!”
Eleanor’s voice broke.
Daniel stopped.
His mother covered her face.
“I know.”
Claire took Daniel’s arm.
He was shaking.
They left.
For three days Daniel did not speak to Eleanor.
Claire understood.
Betrayal did not become harmless simply because it came from someone who loved you.
Meanwhile, Vanessa was denied bail after prosecutors presented evidence that she had attempted to interfere with witnesses.
But the biggest shock came during financial discovery.
Her attorney filed a claim stating that Vanessa was pregnant.
Daniel nearly dropped the paperwork.
Claire read it twice.
“She’s lying.”
“Probably.”
But Vanessa demanded DNA testing once the child was born and implied Daniel could be the father.
The accusation spread.
Someone leaked it to a gossip site.
By the next morning, headlines were everywhere.
WEALTHY CONNECTICUT HEIR IN LOVE TRIANGLE WITH PREGNANT WIFE AND BROTHER’S WIDOW.
Claire stared at the article.
“They’re making you look like you cheated.”
Daniel threw his phone on the couch.
“She planned this.”
The bedroom scene.
The inheritance.
The pregnancy claim.
Vanessa was trying to build a public story where she and Daniel had an affair.
Claire looked at him.
“What if she knew there were cameras?”
“What?”
“The hallway security camera.”
Daniel froze.
Their upstairs hallway camera had been disabled for “maintenance” that afternoon.
Vanessa had told the housekeeper it was malfunctioning.
Claire’s eyes widened.
“She made sure there was no video showing you were barely conscious.”
Daniel immediately called Soto.
Investigators searched Vanessa’s devices.
Deleted files were recovered.
Among them was a draft email written before the staged bedroom incident.
If Claire leaves Daniel, everything changes.
Another message to an unidentified contact read:
Once she sees us together, she’ll never believe him again.
But the most important discovery was a photograph.
Vanessa had taken it herself.
Daniel unconscious on the bed.
Timestamped seventeen minutes before Claire arrived.
The image proved he had been incapacitated.
Prosecutors added charges.
Then came the final blow to Vanessa’s pregnancy story.
Medical records showed she was not pregnant.
She had forged the documents.
Daniel sat with Claire after hearing the news.
“She keeps creating realities.”
Claire rested her head against him.
“Because eventually she starts believing them.”
Daniel looked toward the nursery they had begun setting up in their temporary rental.
“What scares me is how close it came to working.”
Claire touched his cheek.
“But it didn’t.”
He kissed her palm.
“We almost lost everything.”
“No.”
She smiled faintly.
“We almost lost trust.”
“That’s everything.”
“Then we build it again.”
For the first time, Daniel smiled.
Later that night, Claire received a letter forwarded from the Mercer house.
No return address.
Inside was a single photograph of Vanessa and Thomas.
On the back, someone had written:

VANESSA DIDN’T KILL THOMAS FOR MONEY.
