Chapter 6 - EVELYN'S PERFECT LITTLE LIE|

Lauren wanted me to hand the phone straight to the police.

I agreed that the message and photograph needed to be preserved, but I couldn't stop thinking about Evelyn. For twelve years, she had treated me as an intruder in a family she believed belonged exclusively to her and Daniel.

She criticized the way I dressed, the food I served, and the career I had abandoned after Noah was born. She called me ungrateful whenever I asked Daniel to spend more time with his son. She even described my late father's modest home as an embarrassment when relatives visited.

I had always assumed she simply disliked me.

Now I wondered whether she had been protecting something much bigger.

Mara advised me not to contact Evelyn alone. We agreed that any meeting would need to happen in a public place, with appropriate support nearby. But before arrangements could be made, Evelyn contacted me herself.

Her message was brief.

Claire, we need to talk. Daniel is making mistakes, and you don't understand what is at stake.

I replied that I would speak with her only if Mara knew about the meeting.

Evelyn answered almost immediately.

Of course. Bring whoever you like. I have nothing to hide.

We met that afternoon in a quiet conference room at a community legal center. Evelyn arrived wearing a cream-colored suit, pearl earrings, and the same expression of offended dignity she wore whenever someone challenged her authority.

She looked at the bandage on my hand.

"I heard you were hurt."

"You watched Daniel shove me into a table."

Her lips tightened.

"I was shocked by what happened."

"You were smiling."

For a moment, the mask slipped. Then she sat down and placed her handbag beside her chair.

"I know you're angry, Claire. But anger won't solve anything."

"Neither will pretending it didn't happen."

Evelyn looked toward Mara, who had joined us to ensure the conversation remained properly documented.

"Is this really necessary? Surely a family can discuss its problems without turning everything into a legal spectacle."

Mara replied calmly.

"Claire is free to have support present. We are here because she has concerns about her safety and possible financial misconduct."

Evelyn sighed as though everyone in the room had inconvenienced her.

"Daniel made some poor decisions. I won't defend his temper. But the financial situation is complicated."

"Then explain the account in my name."

Her eyes sharpened.

"What account?"

"The one connected to the loan application."

Evelyn looked down at her handbag.

It was a small movement, but I noticed it.

"Victor handled certain financial arrangements," she said. "He assured us that everything was properly documented."

"Us?"

She lifted her chin.

"Daniel and I."

The answer landed like a slap.

My husband and his mother had been discussing financial arrangements involving my name without my knowledge. Whether Evelyn understood every detail or not, she had been part of the conversation.

"Why was my name used?"

"I don't know that it was."

"You just said Victor handled the arrangements."

"I said he handled arrangements. That doesn't mean he forged anything."

"Then help us find out."

Evelyn's fingers tightened around the strap of her handbag.

"You have no idea what would happen if Daniel's company collapsed. Hundreds of employees depend on him. Their families depend on him. You could destroy all of that because you're upset about a domestic argument."

I stared at her.

"Your son hurt me. Someone may have used my identity to borrow nearly three hundred thousand dollars. And you're worried about his reputation?"

"I'm worried about consequences."

"So am I."

For the first time, Evelyn looked genuinely uncertain.

She reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper. It was a copy of an email exchange between her and Victor Hale. Most of the conversation concerned a company loan, but one line stood out.

The personal guarantee will make the application stronger. Claire won't object once Daniel explains the family benefits.

Beneath it, Evelyn had replied:

Make sure the paperwork is handled before she asks questions.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"You knew."

Evelyn's voice grew defensive.

"I knew they wanted a guarantee. I believed you would agree. Daniel told me he had already discussed it with you."

"He lied."

"Perhaps."

"Did you know he hadn't asked me?"

She didn't answer.

That silence told me more than any confession.

Mara asked Evelyn whether she would preserve the original emails and cooperate with the investigation. Evelyn agreed, but only after insisting she would consult her attorney first.

As she rose to leave, she paused beside me.

"You think leaving him makes you powerful," she said quietly. "But Daniel has spent twelve years building a life that can crush you if he chooses."

I stood, though my knees were shaking.

"Then perhaps it's time someone showed him that I can survive without it."

Evelyn's face hardened.

She walked out without another word.

A few minutes later, Mara received an alert from the financial investigator. Victor Hale had just submitted a formal statement claiming that I personally authorized the loan.

Attached to it was a scanned copy of my signature.

And this time, the document carried a date from a day when I had been in another state with Noah.
