Chapter 11 - The Letter in the SuitcaseThe kitchen was now quiet, a stark contrast to the storm of emotions that had just erupted on the marble counter.

Daniel stood in the doorway of Norma’s former spare room, his hand trembling as he held the black leather garment bag. He had promised Maren he would collect his mother's belongings and have them delivered to her government-mandated community confinement address within forty-eight hours.

He stepped inside. The room was empty, stripped bare of Maren’s furniture, but it still carried the faint, haunting scent of Norma’s expensive floral perfume and black coffee.

Daniel pulled a vintage brown leather suitcase from the back of the closet—the same one his mother had arrived with fifty-five days ago to “give them space.”

He unzipped it. Inside, beneath a stack of cream cardigans and silver bob wigs, was a small, sealed legal envelope addressed directly to him: For Daniel.

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

He sat on the edge of the mattress, his heart hammering against his ribs, and carefully tore open the envelope. Inside was a handwritten letter in his late father’s precise, dark-ink handwriting, dated ten years ago, just two weeks before Harrison Mercer passed away from a massive heart attack.

“Daniel,” the letter began. “If you are reading this, your mother has finally used our family’s security as currency. For twenty years, I have covered her gambling debts, siphoned money from our corporate trust to pay off her hidden liabilities, and lied to protect the only illusion she cares about: our suburban pride. She is not sick from stress, Daniel. She is a parasite. She will sell you, your marriage, and your dignity if it buys her another day of status. Protect your wife, Daniel. Protect your inheritance from the only woman who ever loved you unconditionally... because I was a coward who couldn't protect mine.”

Daniel dropped the letter onto the bare mattress, the terrifying reality of what he had allowed Norma to do washing over his soul.

He hadn't been protecting a vulnerable mother from a foreclosure crisis. He had been aiding a fraudster who had been liquidating their family’s assets to fuel her hidden addiction, and who had ultimately intended to use Elena’s paid-off Elm Street house as her next, final jackpot.
