Chapter 6 - An Unexpected Shield

Danielle stepped forward, pulling a thin file from her briefcase and handing it directly to Edmund’s private attorney, who had just rushed off the elevator.
"What is this, Danielle?" Preston asked, his voice shaking with confusion.
"It's a motion for temporary emergency guardianship," Danielle announced, her clear, professional voice echoing through the quiet hallway. "Filed thirty minutes ago in Cook County Family Court on behalf of Nora Sullivan."
Preston’s mouth fell open. He stared at me as if I had spoken in an ancient, forgotten language. "Nora... you?"
Miriam let out a strangled, furious laugh. "This is a joke! You have no legal standing! You're divorced! You aren't related to that child by blood, marriage, or law! This is extortion!"
"Shut up, Miriam," Edmund snapped, his voice hitting the corridor like a whip crack.
The matriarch choked on her breath, falling completely silent. In forty years of marriage, Edmund had never spoken to her with such raw, unfiltered disgust.
"Explain this, Danielle," Edmund said, his eyes fixed on my attorney.
"It's very simple," Danielle said, stepping between the Callaways and the nursery window. "Elena Ramos fled jurisdiction, leaving an unidentified newborn. Under Illinois state statute, the infant would immediately become a ward of the state and enter emergency protective custody. However, under the family hardship exception, any responsible party with established ties to the custodial household may petition for temporary guardianship pending formal placement proceedings."
"Why would you do this, Nora?" Preston whispered, tears streaming freely down his cheeks now. "After everything I did to you... why would you take on this burden?"
I looked through the glass at the baby boy. He had shifted in his sleep, his tiny cap falling slightly over his forehead, his small mouth working as if dreaming of warm milk.
"I'm not doing this for you, Preston," I said, meeting his bloodshot eyes without a trace of softness. "And I'm certainly not doing this for your family. I'm doing this because I refuse to let an innocent child pay the price for your cowardice and your mother's poisonous pride. If he goes into the county system today, he becomes a statistic in an international fraud case. He will spend months being shuffled between overcrowded group homes while lawyers argue about jurisdiction."
I turned back to Edmund. "Danielle has already arranged temporary medical clearance with the chief of pediatrics. I have the resources, I have the time, and I have a home where nobody is judged by their pedigree. I will take him home for thirty days until the state completes its background investigation."
"And the Callaway name?" Edmund asked quietly, his voice trembling.
"Will not appear on a single document," I replied firmly. "His legal intake will be recorded as Leo Sullivan. He will carry my maiden name. Your money will not touch him. Your family will have zero claim on him. And you, Preston, will have no parental rights unless you undergo full psychological and legal evaluation through the court."
Preston sank down onto the plastic waiting chair, burying his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with uncontrollable, wracking sobs. For the first time in his life, he was witnessing true strength—not the strength of money, titles, or corporate leverage, but the unyielding strength of basic human decency.
Edmund stood silent for a long, agonizing moment. Then, slowly, the old titan nodded his head. He pulled his gold fountain pen from his pocket, signed the waiver release on the administrator’s clipboard, and handed it to Danielle.

"Take the boy, Nora," Edmund said softly, his voice cracking with an emotion he had spent a lifetime suppressing. "He's better off with a Sullivan than he ever would have been with us."
