Chapter 3: He's Your Brother

Chapter 3: He's Your Brother

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

Arthur Sterling's words seemed to drain every ounce of sound from the Grand Plaza ballroom.

"He's my son."

The silence lasted only a second.

Then chaos erupted.

Gasps echoed from every corner of the room. Guests exchanged stunned looks. Someone dropped a champagne flute, sending crystal shards skidding across the marble floor.

"What?"

Julian stared at Arthur as if he'd lost his mind.

"That's impossible."

I couldn't speak.

I couldn't think.

I simply stood there, frozen in my wedding gown, staring at the young waiter beside my father.

My father...

And the stranger he had just called his son.

My knees suddenly felt weak.

"Dad..." I whispered.

"You only have one child."

Arthur looked at me with unbearable sadness.

"I wish that were true."

The words hit harder than the slap he had given Julian.

Leo looked just as stunned.

His eyes darted between Arthur and me, searching for an explanation that made sense.

"There has to be some mistake," he said quietly. "Sir... I don't know you."

Arthur's expression softened.

"I know."

He swallowed hard, fighting to steady his voice.

"You've spent your entire life believing you were abandoned."

Leo said nothing.

Arthur took a slow breath.

"Twenty-one years ago, before anyone knew my name, your mother and I had nothing."

The ballroom remained silent.

Even the photographers lowered their cameras.

"We lived in an old delivery van behind a warehouse. Every dollar we earned went toward keeping food on the table."

His eyes drifted somewhere far away.

"As if that wasn't enough... our newborn daughter was diagnosed with a severe heart condition."

My chest tightened.

"I was that baby?"

Arthur nodded.

"You needed an experimental surgery."

"The doctors told us that without it..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

"You wouldn't survive."

A tear rolled down my cheek.

"I never knew."

"No."

Arthur shook his head.

"Because your mother and I promised we'd never let you carry that burden."

He looked at Leo.

"But saving one child came at a terrible cost."

The ballroom had become so quiet that every word felt impossibly heavy.

"A private adoption agency approached us."

"They offered to pay for Chloe's surgery."

Julian frowned.

"So what?"

Arthur's jaw clenched.

"There was one condition."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"We had to give up our firstborn son."

A wave of disbelief swept through the guests.

"No..."

I whispered.

Arthur slowly nodded.

"They promised he'd be adopted by a loving family."

"We believed them."

"We wanted to believe them."

His shoulders sagged beneath the weight of a secret carried for more than two decades.

"The surgery saved Chloe's life."

He looked at me.

"And I thanked God every day that my little girl survived."

Then he turned back to Leo.

"But not a single day passed without wondering where my son was."

Leo stood perfectly still.

His breathing had become shallow.

Arthur continued.

"Years later, I learned the adoption agency had been involved in multiple criminal investigations."

"The family that adopted you lost everything."

"They declared bankruptcy."

"You entered the foster care system."

Several guests quietly wiped tears from their eyes.

Arthur closed his eyes briefly.

"I searched for you for fifteen years."

"I hired investigators."

"I followed every lead."

"I spent millions."

"But every trail ended the same way."

"Too late."

Leo's voice trembled.

"So..."

"You finally found me?"

Arthur smiled sadly.

"Two weeks ago."

Everyone stared at Leo.

"I wanted to bring you home immediately."

Arthur's eyes filled with emotion.

"But you refused."

Leo lowered his head.

"I didn't want anyone's money."

"I've worked my whole life."

"I wanted to earn my own future."

Arthur nodded proudly.

"You told me you wanted to pay for college yourself."

"You wanted to build your own life."

"So I made you one promise."

"I would respect your decision."

"I wouldn't tell anyone who you were."

"Not until you were ready."

His eyes slowly swept across the destroyed wedding reception.

"Tonight..."

His voice cracked.

"You accepted this catering job for only one reason."

Leo hesitated.

Then he finally answered.

"I just wanted to see my sister."

The words shattered what little strength I had left.

"I didn't expect her to recognize me."

A painful smile crossed his face.

"I only wanted to watch her wedding from a distance."

"I wanted to see if the sacrifice our parents made... had given her a beautiful life."

His eyes met mine.

Instead of anger...

There was only heartbreak.

"I never imagined..."

He glanced at his bleeding hand.

"...this would happen."

I felt my entire world collapsing beneath me.

The brother I never knew existed...

The brother my parents had sacrificed everything to protect...

Had spent his first meeting with me lying on the marble floor while I laughed.

And in that moment...

May you like

I realized the wedding wasn't the greatest tragedy of the day.

I was.
