Chapter 4: The Price of One Life

Chapter 4: The Price of One Life
No one spoke.
The ballroom remained frozen beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers, as though time itself had stopped.
Julian was the first to recover.
"This is insane," he snapped. "Even if he's your son, that doesn't change what happened tonight. He destroyed our wedding."
Arthur slowly turned toward him.
"Our wedding?"
Julian hesitated.
Arthur took another deliberate step forward.
"You still think the cake is the tragedy?"
His voice was calm, but every word carried enough weight to silence the room.
"You humiliated my son."
"You crushed his hand."
"You treated another human being as though his life had no value."
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"And somehow..."
"You still believe you're the victim."
Julian opened his mouth, but no words came.
Arthur looked back at Leo.
"I found you two weeks ago."
"I wanted to tell the world who you were."
"I wanted to bring you home."
Leo smiled faintly.
"You offered me everything."
Arthur nodded.
"The house."
"The family name."
"The company."
"My entire inheritance."
A wave of whispers spread through the ballroom.
Everyone knew what the Sterling fortune represented.
It wasn't millions.
It wasn't even billions.
It was one of the largest privately held investment empires in the country.
Yet Leo had turned it down.
"I couldn't accept it," Leo said quietly.
"I didn't earn it."
Arthur looked at him with unmistakable pride.
"You asked me for only one thing."
Leo nodded.
"I wanted the chance to build my own life."
"I wanted to finish college."
"I wanted a job."
"I wanted people to respect me for who I am—not because of my last name."
Arthur smiled sadly.
"So I arranged this catering position."
The room fell silent again.
"I wanted to watch from a distance."
"I wanted to see my children together before telling the truth."
His gaze slowly shifted toward me.
"I imagined introducing you after the ceremony."
"I imagined bringing my family back together."
His voice cracked.
"Instead..."
He looked down at Leo's injured hand.
"...I watched my own daughter laugh while my son screamed in pain."
I covered my mouth, unable to stop the tears.
"Dad..."
"I'm so sorry."
Arthur didn't answer.
His silence hurt more than anger ever could.
Julian's father suddenly rushed forward.
"Arthur, please."
His face had turned pale.
"There has to be another way."
"The children made a terrible mistake."
"We'll compensate Leo."
"We'll pay whatever he wants."
Arthur looked at him without emotion.
"You still don't understand."
"This has never been about money."
The older man swallowed hard.
"Our companies..."
"The merger..."
Arthur interrupted him before he could finish.
"There will be no merger."
A ripple of panic swept across the front row.
"You invested everything expecting Sterling Capital to lead the next funding round."
Arthur's expression never changed.
"That deal is over."
Julian's father stared in horror.
"You can't be serious."
"I've never been more serious."
Arthur reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and removed his phone.
He pressed a single button.
"My legal team has already been notified."
"My board has approved every document."
"As of this moment..."
He looked directly into Julian's terrified eyes.
"Sterling Capital is withdrawing every dollar invested in Vance Technologies."
Julian's face drained of color.
"No..."
Arthur continued.
"Every line of credit."
"Every strategic partnership."
"Every pending acquisition."
"Every commercial lease backed by my firm."
He paused.
"Cancelled."
The ballroom exploded into frantic whispers.
Several executives immediately pulled out their phones.
Others hurried toward the exits, already making calls.
They knew exactly what those words meant.
The Vance empire wasn't simply losing an investor.
It was losing the foundation that kept it standing.
Julian stumbled backward.
"You... you can't destroy my family's company over this."
Arthur's expression remained cold.
"No."
"I didn't destroy it."
He looked directly into Julian's eyes.
"You did."
Julian's knees buckled beneath him.
For the second time that night...
The most powerful man in the room wasn't standing anymore.

And this time...
No one rushed to help him.
