Chapter 5

That night, Rosa could not sleep.

She walked through the house slowly.

Every room seemed to hold a memory.

The living room where her father had once sat.

The kitchen where Arturo had taken his first steps.

The hallway where Ernesto had carried boxes after they moved in.

For years, Rosa had believed her life was built on sacrifice.

Now she wondered how much of it had been built on secrets.

At midnight, she went to the old study.

Ernesto's desk stood near the window.

The desk Mateo had found the documents behind.

Rosa turned on the lamp.

She opened every drawer.

Receipts.

Old pens.

Photographs.

A broken watch.

Then she found something else.

A small metal box.

She had never seen it before.

Rosa tried to open it.

Locked.

She remembered the brass key.

The key Mateo had given her.

She took it from the drawer.

The key fit perfectly.

Rosa froze.

Inside the box was a cassette tape.

A photograph.

And a second key.

The photograph showed three men standing outside the old commercial building.

Her father.

Sebastián.

And another man Rosa did not recognize.

On the back of the photograph was written:

“Before the transfer.”

Rosa stared at the unknown man.

Who was he?

She turned the photograph over again.

There was a name written beneath the sentence.

“Julián Vega.”

Rosa had never heard the name.

The cassette tape had no label.

She took it to the kitchen.

Mateo was asleep in the guest room.

Rosa almost woke him.

Then she stopped.

She did not want to pull him into another nightmare.

But she had no cassette player.

The next morning, she called Elena.

Elena arrived with an old device.

“Where did you find this?”

“In Ernesto's desk.”

Elena examined the cassette.

“Do you know what's on it?”

“No.”

They placed the tape inside.

The machine made a clicking sound.

Then static.

Rosa held her breath.

A man's voice appeared.

Her father's voice.

Rosa covered her mouth.

She had not heard that voice in more than thirty years.

“I'm recording this because if something happens to me, the truth must remain somewhere.”

Rosa's eyes filled with tears.

The voice continued.

“Sebastián has betrayed the family.”

Elena leaned closer.

“ He took money from the trust.”

The recording crackled.

“He believes I will remain silent because he is family.”

A pause.

Then Rosa's father's voice became lower.

“But I have proof.”

Rosa gripped the table.

The recording continued.

“Julián Vega helped him transfer the property.”

Elena looked at Rosa.

The name matched the photograph.

Then the voice said something that changed everything.

“Arturo saw them.”

Rosa froze.

The tape continued.

“He was there the night they signed the papers.”

Rosa looked toward the hallway.

Arturo had been sixteen.

He had seen something.

But what?

The recording ended.

The machine clicked.

No one moved.

Finally, Elena asked:

“Where is Arturo?”

Rosa looked at the clock.

“He said he would come today.”

Elena stood.

“Then we need to ask him one question.”

Rosa knew what it was.

What did Arturo see that night?

Because if he had seen the signing of the property transfer, he might have known the truth for more than twenty years.

And if that was true…

Then Arturo had not merely betrayed Rosa because of debt.

He had betrayed her while knowing exactly what belonged to her.
