Chapter 19 - The Girl in Room 512

|

The beam of Tessa’s flashlight shook violently across the concrete cellar walls as she read her mother’s 2016 letter with her heart roaring in her ears like a freight train:

Tessa, my darling girl — If Frank ever gives you this letter, then you are grown up and strong enough to know the sacrifice he made for us on the night of November 10, 2016. Your father, Frank Cole, was never just a city building inspector. Twenty years ago in Detroit, before he entered Witness Protection and married me, Frank was Don Lorenzo Vane’s childhood best friend and the secret architect who built all the subterranean security vaults for the Vane family in Chicago.

Tessa sank onto an overturned wooden crate, her legs unable to hold her weight.

On the night of November 9, 2016, her mother’s letter continued, Lorenzo Vane’s wife, Elena, came to our house in the middle of a blizzard in active labor—hiding from the men inside the Vane family who had just cut the brakes on Lorenzo’s car to wipe out his bloodline while twenty-six-year-old Roman was away in Milan! I had just gone into premature labor with your baby sister that same night at home, and our baby was stillborn. Elena gave birth to a healthy baby girl with a congenital heart murmur—Chloe—on our kitchen table twenty minutes before the hitmen tracked Elena’s phone to our street.

Tessa pressed her hand over her mouth to stifle a cry as the devastating truth poured off the page:

To save Lorenzo’s newborn daughter from the killers hunting the Vane bloodline, Elena took our stillborn baby wrapped in her blanket, got back into her car to draw the killers away from our house toward the river bridge, and died in the river crash so the killers would believe Don Lorenzo’s unborn child died with her! And I checked into St. Luke’s Hospital the next morning claiming Chloe was the baby I had delivered at home—before my own heart failed from the blood loss two days later. Frank swore an oath over my hospital bed to raise Lorenzo Vane’s daughter as your little sister, and never tell Roman she existed until they found out who inside the Vane family actually cut Lorenzo’s brakes in 2016!

Ten-year-old Chloe—the little girl sleeping upstairs in The Sovereign Hotel right now—wasn't just a maid’s sick sister whom Roman Vane had generously saved out of kindness.

Chloe was Roman Vane’s own ten-year-old half-sister—the miracle child his father and stepmother had died to hide ten years ago!

Wait.

Tessa’s eyes dropped to the final paragraph at the bottom of the page—added in her father Frank Cole’s handwriting four months ago, right before he went to inspect the Wacker Drive tower:

August 2, 2026 — When I went through the city archives for the Wacker Drive riverfront tunnel this week, I finally found the police impound mechanic’s report from the night Don Lorenzo Vane’s brakes were cut on November 10, 2016. Victor Vance and Arthur Sterling didn't cut Lorenzo’s brakes ten years ago. The man who paid the mechanic in 2016—and who has been quietly guiding Roman from behind the curtain for ten years while waiting to eliminate the last of Lorenzo’s blood—is the man who pulled Lorenzo’s body out of the river that night.

Tessa flipped to the attached 2016 police impound sign-out receipt at the back of the folder.

Signed at the bottom of the 2016 brake-inspection suppression order wasn't Victor Vance, and it wasn't Don Bellini.

The signature belonged to the family’s trusted physician and consigliere—Dr. Emilio Rossini—and his nephew, Matteo!

And right now, back at The Sovereign Hotel, Dr. Rossini was sitting upstairs on the sixty-fourth floor watching over ten-year-old Chloe while Matteo stood fifteen feet above Tessa’s head at the top of the dark basement stairs with a loaded gun!
