CHAPTER 2 – PART 5 (Final)

CHAPTER 2 – PART 5 (Final)
The rear passenger door of the SUV slowly creaked open.
A small, pale face peeked out.
Mateo.
His eyes were red from crying.
The moment he saw me standing there—bleeding, bruised, but still on my feet—his entire expression changed.
"Dad!"
He jumped out of the SUV and sprinted toward me.
I dropped the golf club onto the pavement.
Ignoring the stabbing pain in my ribs, I knelt down and caught him in my arms.
He wrapped himself tightly around my neck, sobbing so hard his little body shook.
I held him with everything I had.
"It's okay, buddy," I whispered, stroking his hair.
"I'm here now."
"It's over."
"No one's taking you anywhere."
"I promise."
Mateo buried his face against my shoulder.
"I was so scared, Dad," he cried.
"I know."
"I know."
"But you're safe now."
In the distance, the wail of police sirens pierced the night.
They were getting closer.
Fast.
Someone at the gas station must have heard the screaming and called the authorities.
Héctor was still lying on the pavement.
He clutched his shattered knee, groaning in pain, unable to stand.
Valeria stood beside the SUV with both hands on top of her head.
She stared helplessly at the flashing red and blue lights racing toward the station.
For the first time, she realized there was nowhere left to run.
Within moments, several state police cruisers screeched into the parking lot.
Officers jumped out with their weapons drawn.
"Police!"
"Everyone, keep your hands where we can see them!"
Héctor didn't even try to resist.
He couldn't.
Two officers quickly handcuffed him while paramedics rushed toward us.
Another pair of officers surrounded Valeria.
She looked at me one last time.
Her eyes were filled with panic.
"Please..."
"You don't understand..."
I cut her off before she could finish.
"No."
"I understand perfectly."
"You destroyed our family..."
"For money."
"And for a criminal."
I tightened my grip around Mateo's shoulder.
"I hope it was worth it."
"Because you'll never see my son again."
Valeria lowered her head.
She said nothing.
Only tears rolled silently down her face as officers placed handcuffs around her wrists and led her toward a patrol car.
Half an hour later...
I sat in the back of an ambulance.
A paramedic carefully cleaned the cut above my eyebrow before wrapping thick bandages around my ribs.
Every breath still hurt.
But for the first time that night...
I could breathe.
Mateo sat beside me under a warm blanket.
One of the officers had bought him a cup of hot chocolate from the convenience store.
He held it with both hands, taking tiny sips while refusing to let go of my arm.
He kept looking at me as though I were the strongest man in the world.
My phone vibrated inside my pocket.
My heart skipped.
It was my mother's number.
I answered immediately.
"Hello?"
A calm male voice spoke instead.
"Mr. Nguyen?"
"This is Dr. Morales from Villa General Hospital."
"Your mother gave us your phone number."
I held my breath.
"Your father, Mr. Arturo, has been admitted to the emergency department."
"He suffered a fractured rib and multiple severe contusions."
"But fortunately..."
"The injuries did not damage any vital organs."
"He's stable."
"And currently under observation."
"Your mother is here with him."
The weight crushing my chest finally lifted.
A tear rolled down my face.
Not from pain.
From relief.
"Thank you, Doctor," I whispered.
"My son and I are on our way."
After hanging up, I looked at Mateo.
He smiled weakly.
But it was real.
We had survived the worst day of our lives.
We had seen betrayal...
Violence...
And the darkest side of someone we once loved.
Yet somehow...
We were still together.
Linh Nguyễn Shop could wait.
The inventory could wait.
Customers could wait.
Nothing mattered more than the little boy sitting beside me...
Or the two elderly parents waiting for me at the hospital.
After the paramedics finished treating me, Mateo and I slowly walked back to my car.
Behind us...
Patrol cars pulled away one after another.
Valeria and Héctor sat handcuffed in the back seats.
Their future would now be decided in a courtroom.
Mine...
Would be rebuilt one day at a time.
As I drove through the cold streets of Mexico City toward the hospital, Mateo quietly reached over and held my hand.
I squeezed his tiny fingers.
Outside, the city kept moving as if nothing had happened.
Traffic flowed.
People laughed.
Neon lights reflected off the wet pavement.
But inside that car...
Everything had changed.
I had almost lost my parents.
I had nearly lost my son.
And I had lost the woman I thought I knew years ago.
Yet despite all of it...
We had survived.
Tomorrow would bring hospital visits...
Police statements...
Lawyers...
And a long road toward healing.
It wouldn't be easy.
But we would face it together.
As long as my son was beside me...
And my parents still had a chance to recover...
There was still hope.
Sometimes family isn't defined by the people who betray you.
It's defined by the people willing to bleed for you.
And that night...
My father had proven exactly what love looked like.
He had shielded my mother with his own body.
I had fought with everything I had left to save my son.
And Mateo...
Despite being only seven years old...
Had found the courage to stand against the people who tried to steal his future.
No amount of money...
No lie...
No act of violence...
May you like
Would ever be stronger than that.
