Chapter 10 - The Sunset That Reminded Me How Far I’d Come

Last night, Ethan and I hosted a small dinner party at the house. Mia was in town from San Francisco, Sarah and her family were there, Jessica and her kids came too. We ate grilled steak and corn on the cob, laughed until our sides hurt, and watched the kids play with Luna in the backyard.

After everyone left, Ethan and I sat on the patio, sharing a bottle of wine, watching the sunset paint the sky pink and orange. Luna was curled up at our feet, snoring softly.

Ethan squeezed my hand. “You know, when I first met you outside the courthouse, I had no idea how incredible you were. I just thought you were a woman who’d been through a lot. But look at you now. You’ve built something that matters. You’ve changed so many lives.”

I leaned my head on his shoulder, looking out at the hills, at the pool glinting in the fading light, at the house I’d bought with my own two hands, the house Ryan had tried to steal.

I thought about the day I’d closed on this place, the keys cold in my hand, thinking it was the start of a life with Ryan. I thought about the empty foyer, the envelope taped to the wall, the fear I’d felt when I realized how much he’d betrayed me. I thought about the court hearings, the viral videos, the women who’d reached out to say my story had saved them.

This house had seen so much: betrayal, anger, fear, but also joy, love, hope, healing. It wasn’t just a building. It was a testament to the fact that hard work pays off, that boundaries matter, that you can rebuild your life even when it feels like everything is falling apart.

I smiled, squeezing Ethan’s hand back. “I’m happy,” I said. “Really, truly happy.”

Somewhere in the distance, a cricket chirped. The last of the sun dipped below the hills, and the first stars came out. For the first time in my life, I knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

The house that had almost been taken from me was finally, fully mine. And so was my life.
