Chapter 19 - Four Words That Changed Everything|

Sophie had never felt so afraid.

Vittorio stood behind Isabella with the gun pressed near her shoulder. The conservatory smelled of wet soil and dead leaves. Broken glass glittered beneath the moonlight.

Massimo held the ledger case.

“You have what you wanted,” he said. “Let her go.”

Vittorio laughed.

“You still don't understand. I never wanted the ledger. I wanted to know whether you'd sacrifice it for someone you love.”

“You already know the answer.”

“Do I?”

Vittorio glanced at Sophie.

“Put the case down, Massimo.”

Massimo obeyed.

“Now step away.”

He did.

Sophie watched the movement of his hands, the angle of Vittorio's weapon, and the narrow space between Isabella's chair and a heavy iron table.

She was a florist. She understood fragile things, awkward spaces, and how a small change could transform an entire arrangement.

She also understood that Vittorio expected everyone to follow his instructions.

That was his weakness.

Sophie moved toward the table.

Vittorio noticed.

“Don't move.”

She froze.

“I'm only trying to help.”

“Then stay where you are.”

Massimo looked at her, and Sophie saw the question in his eyes.

She gave the smallest nod.

When Vittorio turned toward the ledger case, Sophie grabbed a metal watering can and threw it at the glass panel beside him.

The crash startled him.

Massimo lunged.

The gun fired.

Isabella screamed.

Massimo struck Vittorio's arm, sending the weapon skidding across the floor. Rafael and two investigators rushed through the side entrance.

Vittorio fought wildly, but the officers forced him to the ground.

“Get your hands off me!” he shouted. “You have no idea who I am!”

One investigator cuffed him.

“We know exactly who you are.”

Massimo ran to Isabella and freed her hands.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head, crying.

“No, my boy.”

Sophie stood nearby, trembling.

Massimo turned toward her.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then he crossed the room and took her face gently between his hands.

“Are you all right?”

Sophie nodded, though tears blurred her vision.

“You could have been shot.”

“So could you.”

“I told you to stay behind me.”

“And I told you I don't take orders very well.”

A broken laugh escaped him.

Then he pressed his forehead against hers.

“I thought I was going to lose you.”

Sophie closed her eyes.

“You don't get to lose me without asking.”

He stared at her.

“I don't know how to ask for something I don't deserve.”

“Then start by telling the truth.”

He drew a slow breath.

“I love you, Sophie.”

The words seemed to surprise him as much as they surprised her.

“I don't love you because you walked into my bedroom or because my family thinks you're convenient. I love you because you see the person beneath the name, and you refuse to let me hide from him. I love you because you challenge me when I'm wrong. And because when everything fell apart, you stayed.”

Sophie touched his cheek.

“Then here's the truth, Massimo. I love you, too. But I won't spend my life being protected by someone who thinks love means making every decision for me.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“I'll spend the rest of my life proving it.”

She smiled through her tears.

“That's a better answer.”

Behind them, Vittorio was dragged toward the exit.

He twisted around one last time.

“You think this ends with me? Your family will never be clean, Massimo!”

Massimo looked at him without hatred.

“Then we'll start by telling the truth.”

The investigators led Vittorio away.

The room fell quiet.

Sophie turned toward the broken glass and scattered flowers.

“I'm going to need a lot of replacements.”

Massimo laughed, a real laugh that seemed to release years of tension.

“Send me the invoice.”

“I'm charging you double.”

“Fair.”

For the first time since their accidental meeting, neither of them was pretending.

But as the investigators prepared to leave, one officer approached Massimo with a final document recovered from Vittorio's coat.

It was a letter written by Massimo's father.

The date was six years before Elena's death.

And the first line read:

If Vittorio has done what I fear, my son must never learn the truth from anyone else.
