Chapter 5 - A JOB OFFER IN NEW YORK|

Claire had never imagined that freedom would arrive in the form of an employment contract.
Yet there it was, waiting in her email inbox at a small café three blocks from Jonathan Reed's office.
Carter Global — Senior Director of Financial Strategy.
The offer included a generous salary, relocation assistance, private health insurance, and authority over a department responsible for evaluating major acquisitions.
It was the kind of position Claire had spent years working toward before Vincent's world swallowed her ambitions.
She had met Ethan Carter during a financial restructuring project. He had been one of the few executives who challenged her ideas without trying to diminish them. When he learned she had declined the first offer, he had simply said she was wasting her talent.
At the time, Claire had laughed.
Now she understood he had been right.
Her phone rang.
“Tell me you're accepting,” Ethan said after she answered.
“I haven't signed yet.”
“Then I'll give you another twenty-four hours to appreciate how reasonable I'm being.”
She smiled despite herself.
“Ethan, I may need to relocate quickly.”
“That's what relocation assistance is for. Is something wrong?”
Claire considered how much to reveal.
“My marriage is ending.”
Ethan's tone changed.
“I'm sorry.”
“Thank you.”
“Is there any chance your personal situation could put you at risk?”
She looked through the café window at the pedestrians passing beneath umbrellas.
“Possibly. My husband has a complicated professional life.”
“Do you need help?”
“Not with the divorce. I have an attorney. I may need discretion.”
“You'll have it.”
He did not ask who her husband was.
That was one reason she trusted him.
After the call, Claire signed the offer electronically and sent it back.
A small confirmation appeared on the screen.
Welcome to Carter Global.
She stared at it longer than necessary.
Then she opened a notebook and began making lists: identification documents, medical records, bank statements, clothing, medication, transportation, temporary housing.
She did not write escape at the top.
She wrote next chapter.
Jonathan had advised her to make no sudden financial transfers and to avoid any action that could be misrepresented as hiding marital assets. Claire followed his advice carefully. Her savings had existed before the marriage, and she gathered records showing their origins.
She also requested copies of her own medical records.
The pregnancy made everything more urgent.
At her appointment that afternoon, the doctor confirmed that the pregnancy appeared to be progressing normally. Claire asked questions about travel, nutrition, and the stress she had experienced.
“Your fall doesn't automatically mean the pregnancy has been harmed,” the doctor explained. “But if you experience bleeding, severe pain, dizziness, or anything unusual, seek medical attention immediately.”
Claire nodded, relieved.
She had not realized how frightened she had been until the doctor said the words aloud.
After leaving the clinic, she sat in a quiet corner of the waiting room and took out the ultrasound photograph.
There was no face yet, no tiny hand to hold, no laugh she could recognize.
Only a small shape that represented a future she had never expected to build alone.
“I don't know what kind of father he'll become,” she whispered. “But I know what kind of mother I'll be.”
Her phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent a message.
You should come home before you make a mistake you can't undo.
Claire's stomach tightened.
She forwarded the message to Jonathan, then blocked the number.
A second message arrived from another unknown contact.
Vincent is worried about you.
She almost replied that worry would have been more convincing if he had looked back at the hotel.
Instead, she put the phone away.
That evening, Claire reserved a seat on a flight to New York for the following afternoon. She chose a direct route and arranged for a car to collect her at the airport.
She did not post about it.
She did not tell mutual acquaintances.
She did not leave a note for Vincent.
Her attorney would handle the legal communication. Her new employer would help her settle into the city. Her doctor would continue monitoring the pregnancy.
For once, she was not making a decision around Vincent's schedule, Vincent's security, or Vincent's temper.
She was making it around her own future.
At the hotel, she packed the ultrasound photograph inside a book and zipped the suitcase.
Then someone knocked on the door.
Three firm knocks.
Claire stopped breathing.
A man's voice came from the corridor.
“Mrs. Moretti? It's Marco Bellini. I'm here alone.”
Claire moved toward the door but did not unlock it.
“What do you want?”
“To give you something.”
“What?”
“Information your husband doesn't know I have.”
Claire's hand tightened around the deadbolt.
“Then leave it under the door.”
There was a pause.
May you like
When Marco spoke again, his voice was lower.
“It's about Sophia Reynolds. And why she was hired in the first place.”
