Chapter 14 - The Price of the Truth|

The gala ended early.
The board announced an emergency suspension of Victor's authority pending review, though he remained a director until the proper procedures could be completed.
He left the ballroom without speaking to the press.
Outside, reporters crowded the entrance, calling Marcus's name and asking Paige whether she intended to reconcile with her husband.
She ignored the questions.
Marcus walked beside her but kept enough distance to make it clear that she had not agreed to a public reunion.
“Are you all right?” he asked when they reached the car.
“I'm tired.”
“I can arrange a driver.”
“I have one.”
He nodded.
“Of course.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Marcus said, “You were extraordinary in there.”
Paige turned toward him.
“Don't turn this into another moment where you praise me instead of listening to me.”
His expression fell.
“I'm sorry.”
She got into her car.
The next morning, Daniel called with an update.
The independent review had uncovered payments to Crown Harbor that were inconsistent with the foundation's stated mission. Some payments appeared to cover security services for private corporate facilities. Others had no supporting invoices.
The review had also identified a transfer to a company connected to Victor's former business partner.
“Does that prove Victor controlled the money?” Paige asked.
“Not by itself. But it strengthens the case for a deeper investigation.”
“What's the next step?”
“Investigators will seek the original records and interview the people who approved the contracts.”
Paige looked at the children's drawings spread across the apartment table.
“Can they prove I didn't authorize the transfers?”
“We can establish that the account was opened using your information without your knowledge. We can also document that the signatures on later approvals differ from your verified signature.”
It was the first encouraging news she had received in days.
Then Daniel's voice changed.
“There's another issue. Victor has been telling people that you and Marcus are planning to reconcile, and that the financial investigation is a private dispute between spouses.”
Paige laughed without humor.
“Of course he is.”
“He's trying to undermine your credibility by making it look personal.”
“Then we'll keep the focus on the evidence.”
That afternoon, Marcus's attorneys proposed a settlement.
He would provide Paige with a separate residence, cover the children's expenses, and transfer a substantial sum into a trust for their future.
In return, she would agree not to make public statements about the foundation and would withdraw any claims against the company.
Paige read the proposal twice.
Then she called Rachel.
“Is this a reasonable settlement?”
“It may be financially generous, but the confidentiality provisions are too broad. They could interfere with your ability to cooperate with investigators.”
“Did Marcus approve this?”
“He signed the instruction to prepare it.”
Paige stared at the document.
He had stood onstage promising transparency. Now his attorneys were offering her money in exchange for silence.
She called him.
“Why?”
“Because I want to protect you and the children.”
“By asking me to stop talking?”
“By preventing this from destroying your life.”
“My life is already being affected by what happened. Money doesn't change that.”
“Paige, you need security. You need somewhere stable for the children.”
“I need the truth.”
“And I need to know you won't be dragged through the press for months.”
She closed her eyes.
“Marcus, you still think the solution to every problem is to control the conditions under which people experience it.”
“That isn't fair.”
“No. It isn't. But neither was being told to leave my own home.”
He fell silent.
She continued.
“I will negotiate a fair financial arrangement. I will protect the children. I will not sign away my right to cooperate with a lawful investigation.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
She ended the call.
That evening, Marcus withdrew the confidentiality proposal and instructed his attorneys to prepare a clean separation agreement that preserved Paige's rights.
It was a small act, but it mattered.
Not because it repaired their marriage.
Because it was the first time he had accepted that she could make a decision he disliked without trying to purchase a different answer.
At 10:12 p.m., Rachel received a new message from an investigator.
Victor's residence had been searched under a valid warrant.
Several files had been recovered.
One contained a list of names, payment dates, and short notes.
Beside Paige's name was a single word:
LEVERAGE.
Beside Marcus's was another:
SUCCESSION.

And beside an unfamiliar name, someone had written:
FINAL AUTHORITY—UNKNOWN.
