Chapter 15 - EVELYN'S CONFESSION

|

Evelyn asked Vincent to leave the room.

He protested, but she insisted.

When the door closed, she took my hand.

"I owe you an apology, Claire."

I had never heard those words from her before.

"For what?"

"For allowing you to believe that Vincent's behavior was merely a disagreement between husband and wife. I knew he was hurting you. I told myself that if I stayed out of it, he would eventually understand what he was doing."

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you intervene?"

"Because I was afraid of losing my son."

Her honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.

Evelyn explained that Eleanor had discovered the financial irregularities several years earlier. She suspected that someone was using the charitable trust to move money out of the family estate.

Margaret Ellis had been investigating the transfers when she died unexpectedly.

But shortly before her death, Margaret had told Evelyn that another woman had been attending meetings in her name.

"Did you know who she was?" I asked.

Evelyn shook her head.

"Only that she had access to the family records."

"Why didn't you tell Arthur?"

"Because I was afraid the scandal would destroy the family. I thought I could handle it quietly."

I almost laughed.

Every person in the Moretti family seemed to have made the same mistake.

They had confused silence with protection.

Evelyn continued.

"On the night Eleanor changed her will, she called me. She said she had discovered that the trust's original beneficiary agreement had been altered."

"Who altered it?"

"She believed it was someone close to her. She asked me to retrieve a document from her bedroom, but before I arrived, someone had already taken it."

"What document?"

"The original agreement naming the person who would inherit control of the trust."

I leaned forward.

"Was it me?"

"Yes. Eleanor wanted you to become trustee because you had spent years helping women escape financial control. She believed you would protect the trust from the family."

I stared at her.

"Then why was my signature forged?"

"Because the person responsible wanted the trust to appear compromised. If you were implicated, the transfer could be challenged and the funds diverted."

"Who would benefit?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"Someone who has been waiting for Eleanor to die."

She opened a drawer and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a woman standing beside a younger Vincent. The woman wore a dark coat and the same leaf-shaped ring.

On the back, Eleanor had written:

The person who knows every secret is not always the person who tells the truth.

Evelyn looked at me.

"I believe the woman is connected to Vincent's father."

I felt my breath catch.

Vincent's father, Richard Moretti, had died when Vincent was a teenager. The family had always described his death as a tragic accident.

"What does Richard have to do with the trust?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"Before he died, Richard discovered that someone was using the Moretti family name to conceal financial crimes. He planned to expose them."

"Who?"

She shook her head.

"Eleanor never told me. But the night Richard died, Margaret Ellis disappeared for six hours."

I stared at the photograph.

The scandal had begun long before my marriage.

And if Richard's death was connected to the trust, the person behind Margaret's identity might have been protecting a secret for decades.

Evelyn squeezed my hand.

"Claire, please be careful. The person you are looking for may be someone you have known your entire life."
