Chapter 12 - Until Midnight

Vance stared at the screen, his breathing suddenly ragged. He looked from Dante’s cold, unblinking gaze over to Delaney by the window.
"Preston lied to me," Vance said quickly, his voice dropping its boardroom polish as raw survival instinct took over. "Dante, you have to believe me—he swore to me at the hospital that he broke his wrist trying to defend your sister from a drunk customer! He told me the bartender was trying to extort us with doctored video!"
"Your son is twenty-six years old, Vance, and you’ve spent twenty-six years buying his way out of DUIs, college assaults, and NDAs," Delaney said from the window, her voice cutting through the quiet office. "You didn't ask questions last night because you never ask questions. You just send men with suppressed pistols to clean up the mess."
"Captain Miller is currently sitting in a warehouse in Cranston having a very candid conversation with my head of security," Dante added smoothly, steepling his fingers over the desk. "He’s already recorded a full confession detailing how you paid him fifty thousand dollars from an offshore Cayman account to murder Ms. Marsh."
Vance gripped the back of a leather visitor’s chair so hard his knuckles turned white.
"What do you want?" Vance rasped. "Name the figure. Ten million? Twenty? Access to the northern rail terminals?"
Dante stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket. He walked around the desk until he was standing toe-to-toe with the older billionaire.
"My sister is a merciful woman, Vance. She asked me not to kill your son, and because I love my sister, I am going to honor her request," Dante said softly. "Here is the deal. By midnight tonight, you will bring Preston to Pier 9. He will sign a full, notarized confession to felony assault, surrender his passport, and serve every single day of a ten-year state prison sentence without parole. In addition, you will transfer fifty-one percent of Hollis Logistics voting shares to the Ferraro Charitable Conservatory Trust."

"And if Preston refuses?" Vance whispered.
"Then at 12:01," Dante said, "I stop listening to my sister."
