BETWEEN THIN WALLS / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Window in the MorningMy name is Derek. I’m thirty-five years old, and eight months ago, my marriage to Amy ended in a quiet, bitter divorce.

We had been together for three years, but by the end, our apartment felt less like a home and more like an arena. Everything turned into an argument: dinner choices, grocery lists, career stress, even total silence. When we finally signed the divorce papers, I didn't feel destroyed, but I didn't feel free either. I just felt completely drained.

Hoping for a fresh start, I rented a two-bedroom apartment at Riverside Commons, a peaceful complex near the edge of town. What I didn't know when I signed the lease was that my next-door neighbor in the adjacent townhouse was Lillian—Amy’s fifty-two-year-old mother.

During my marriage, Lillian had been the one voice of calm. She never took sides, never belittled me, and always carried herself with grace. She looked younger than her age, with warm brown eyes, silver-streaked blonde hair, and an effortless elegance. When we accidentally crossed paths during my move-in, she offered a gentle smile and promised to keep my secret from Amy.

For weeks, we maintained a polite, quiet distance. Until Thursday morning.

At 6:45 AM, I stepped onto my second-floor balcony to water my wilted basil plant. Twenty feet away, through her uncurtained living room window, I saw Lillian. She was standing in a soft blush-pink silk dress, holding a cup of tea, looking radiant in the morning light. I meant to look away, but the sheer peace of her home—so different from the chaotic storm I had lived in for years—held my gaze.

My plastic cup overflowed, spilling water on my shoes.

Lillian turned, her eyes meeting mine through the glass. My face burned with embarrassment, but she didn't look angry or scandalized. She smiled—a knowing, gentle, slightly playful smile—and stepped toward the window.

In a soft voice that somehow carried through the quiet air, she whispered, “Want a look?”

Before I could process her words, she closed the blinds. I stood on my balcony, heart pounding, completely unsure of what had just happened.
