CHAPTER 5

PART 5 – 3:07 A.M.
Every year, on the same date...
I woke up at exactly 3:07 a.m.
Not because I wanted to.
Because memory has its own alarm clock.
The first few years, I dreaded that hour.
Eventually...
I decided to reclaim it.
Instead of lying awake, I began driving across the city.
The streets were always empty.
The lights were always soft.
And every year, I stopped at the same apartment building.
The railings that once collapsed now stood stronger than before.
Fresh paint covered every wall.
Flowers bloomed near the entrance.
A small bronze plaque rested beside the front door.
It read:
Built with accountability. Restored with truth. Dedicated to every survivor who chose tomorrow.
No names.
No photographs.
No mention of Derek.
Or Marlene.
Some people do not deserve monuments.
As dawn approached, Elena joined me with two cups of coffee.
"Still visiting?" she asked.
"I think I always will."
She looked toward the rising sun.
"You know something?"
"What?"
"If they hadn't underestimated you..."
"They would've won."
I nodded.
"That's the strange thing about abusers."
"They mistake silence for weakness."
"And they mistake fear for surrender."
When the first residents stepped outside to begin another ordinary morning, none of them knew why two women were quietly smiling across the street.
That was exactly how I wanted it.
They deserved ordinary lives.
Something I once believed I'd never have.
People often ask what revenge feels like.
They imagine satisfaction.
Victory.
Celebration.
They're wrong.
Revenge fades.
Freedom doesn't.
Freedom is waking up without fear.
Freedom is opening your own front door.
Freedom is hearing footsteps behind you...
...and not flinching.
At 3:07 a.m., Derek believed he was ending my life.
In reality...
He was recording the first piece of evidence that would give me a new one.
And every sunrise since then has been proof that the most dangerous moment of my life...
May you like
became the beginning of everything they could never take away.
