Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the NameLuca survived.

Barely.
The bullet entered beneath his left collarbone and missed an artery by less than an inch.
For eleven hours, Elena sat in a private hospital waiting room wearing someone else's coat over clothes stained with Luca's blood.
Gabriel paced.
Rosa prayed.
Rebecca spoke quietly with federal agents.
Nobody asked Elena to leave.
At 10:16 a.m., the surgeon entered.
"He's stable."
Elena started crying before she could stop herself.
Rosa noticed.
She said nothing.
Matteo survived too.
Gabriel had tackled him before he could fire again.
He was arrested on charges linked to fraud, extortion, kidnapping, conspiracy, and multiple homicide investigations.
But Matteo had spent years preparing for precisely this possibility.
Within forty-eight hours, several witnesses disappeared.
Two withdrew statements.
A warehouse manager claimed he had fabricated documents.
Someone was protecting Matteo.
Luca woke on the second day.
His first question was not about business.
"Elena?"
Rosa smiled.
"She's downstairs."
"Safe?"
"Yes."
His eyes closed.
Rosa studied him.
"Oh, Luca."
"What?"
"You've got it bad."
"I'm on morphine. Don't be ridiculous."
"I'm seventy-two. I recognize love before the people suffering from it do."
"Leave."
She laughed and kissed his forehead.
Elena entered ten minutes later.
Luca looked smaller in the hospital bed.
Human.
She wasn't accustomed to that.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"You look terrible."
"You always know exactly what to say."
"I've been practicing."
A silence followed.
Then Elena's eyes filled.
"You got shot because of me."
"No."
"He pointed the gun at me."
"He shot me because he's insane."
"If I hadn't—"
"Don't."
Luca's voice became firm.
"Do not carry his choices for him."
She looked away.
"I thought you were dead."
"I'm difficult to kill."
"So I've heard."
He smiled faintly.
Then he noticed something.
Her suitcase.
"You're leaving."
"I should."
"Why?"
"Because this happened because I came into your house looking for evidence."
"This happened because my brother built a criminal operation behind my back."
"You don't need me complicating your life."
"Elena."
"Luca."
"Look at me."
She did.
"I want you here."
The honesty startled both of them.
Luca looked away first.
"I mean until the case is finished."
"Of course."
The words hurt more than they should have.
Elena nodded.
"Until the case is finished."
Three weeks later, Luca returned home.
The investigation widened.
More names appeared in Anthony Russo's records.
Judges.
Police officers.
Businessmen.
A state senator's aide.
And one name Luca had never expected.
Gabriel Torres.
Luca stared at the entry for a long time.
Gabriel had been his closest friend for more than a decade.
The notation beside his name read:
G.T. — payments approved by M.M. — security leak.
Elena found Luca alone in the office.
"What happened?"
He handed her the page.
She read it.
"No."
"You recognize it?"
"My father's handwriting."
"Then Gabriel worked for Matteo."
"Or my father thought he did."
Luca's jaw clenched.
"We don't accuse without proof."
"That's surprisingly reasonable."
"I occasionally experiment with it."
She sat.
"Could Matteo have been paying Gabriel without Gabriel knowing?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"I don't know."
That night, Luca tested him.
He created false information about a supposed backup ledger hidden in an abandoned church.
Only Gabriel heard it.
Six hours later, surveillance cameras captured three armed men breaking into the church.
Luca watched the footage in silence.
Elena stood beside him.
"I'm sorry."
"So am I."
The following morning, Gabriel arrived at the estate.
Luca met him in the library.
"Sit."
Gabriel's expression changed.
He knew.
"How long?" Luca asked.
Gabriel exhaled.
"Seven years."
Luca felt something inside him fracture.
"Why?"
"Matteo paid for my daughter's treatment."
Luca froze.
Gabriel had a daughter?
"I didn't know you had a child."
"That was the point."
Gabriel looked exhausted.
"Her mother wanted nothing to do with this life. Sofia was diagnosed with leukemia at four. Treatment was expensive. Matteo found out."
"And bought you."
"He helped me."
"Same thing."
"At first I gave him nothing important."
"At first."
Gabriel lowered his head.
Luca paced toward the window.
"Did you know what he did to Elena?"
"No."
"Daniel?"
"No."
"Anthony Russo?"
"No."
"Then what did you give him?"
"Schedules. Shipment locations. Information about which captains questioned him."
Luca turned.
"Enough to kill people."
Gabriel's eyes closed.
"Yes."
Luca wanted to destroy him.
Instead, he asked something Elena never expected.
"Is your daughter alive?"
Gabriel looked up.
"Yes."
"How old?"
"Twelve."
Luca nodded once.
"Then you're going to help me end this."
Gabriel stared.
"You aren't killing me?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because Matteo already used your daughter once."
Luca stepped closer.
"I'm not becoming him."
That was the moment Elena realized something she had been refusing to see.
Luca wasn't struggling to remain a good man.
He was struggling to become one.
There was a difference.
And somehow that frightened her heart more than his reputation ever had.
Then Rebecca rushed into the library.
"Matteo made bail."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
"The key witness against him disappeared overnight. Prosecutors lost the kidnapping corroboration, and someone tampered with the hotel recording."
Luca's expression went cold.
Rebecca continued.
"And there's more."
She handed him a photograph taken outside the courthouse.
Matteo was standing beside a man Luca recognized instantly.
Salvatore Greco.
Luca's most powerful rival.
Elena looked at him.
"What does this mean?"
Luca stared at the photograph.
"It means Matteo isn't trying to escape anymore."
May you like
"What is he trying to do?"
"Take everything."
