Chapter 13 - The Vote and the Viper

|

On the velvet stage, Commissioner Victoria Sterling spun around to stare up at the thirty-foot projection screen, her face turning the color of wet cement as two hundred shipping executives, state prosecutors, and journalists saw her husband’s signature and credit-card imprint right above Lorenzo Morelli’s name!

Down at Table One, Arthur Sterling bolted up from his chair, knocking his crystal goblet over across the white linen. "Turn that screen off! That’s a private hospitality receipt—it proves nothing!"

"Actually, Mr. Sterling," Clara spoke into the podium microphone, her clear, steady voice echoing effortlessly through the stunned atrium, "as the former Assistant Director of Private Dining at the St. Regis who personally oversaw Vault Room B on the night of March eighteenth, 2024, I can testify under oath that the three-hundred-thousand-dollar Turks and Caicos villa transfer displayed on the right screen was handed across that table by Mr. Morelli in exchange for your wife’s binding vote tonight. And the original carbon copy with your thumbprints is currently sitting in the hands of the U.S. Attorney’s Public Integrity Chief at Table Twelve."

At Table Twelve near the back of the room, the Chief of the Southern District’s Public Corruption Unit—whom Julian had quietly invited to the charity gala as a guest of the hospital endowment—stood up from his table alongside four federal marshals in tuxedos!

"Victoria Sterling and Arthur Sterling," the federal prosecutor called out as the marshals stepped forward to block the stage steps, "step into the side conference room right now—you’re both under federal subpoena for bribery and honest-services fraud!"

Victoria Sterling let out a choked cry, nearly fainting against the podium rail as the marshals escorted her and her screaming husband off the stage—which automatically disqualified her seat on the Harbor Commission and activated the First Alternate Commissioner sitting at the end of the stage, an incorruptible seventy-year-old retired Navy admiral who immediately cast the unanimous fifth vote awarding the fifty-year Red Hook and Port Newark monopoly to Vane Maritime Holdings!

Down on the main floor, Lorenzo Morelli’s fifty-year dream of taking New York Harbor had just evaporated in ninety seconds—and worse, standing ten feet away from him at Table One, sixty-year-old Victor Vance realized that the right half of the giant screen was displaying the text messages from his private encrypted phone ordering Morelli’s hitmen to eliminate Clara at the St. Regis!

Every syndicate captain in the room slowly took three steps away from Victor Vance and Lorenzo Morelli, leaving the two traitors standing in an empty circle of white marble while Dante and twelve of Julian’s armed security operatives sealed the bronze elevator doors at the entrance of the atrium.

"You set me up!" Morelli snarled across the marble floor, his cultured mask shattering into pure street venom as he glared up at Julian and Clara on the stage. "You used that waitress from Tenth Avenue to bait Gallo and follow the trail back to the St. Regis!"

"You sent a man with a machine gun into a cancer ward on Friday morning to shoot a twenty-eight-year-old woman and her fifty-eight-year-old father, Lorenzo," Julian said into the microphone, his calm baritone vibrating with a promise of extinction that made half the room shiver. "Did you really think all I was going to take from you tonight was a harbor lease?"

Julian glanced at his watch: 11:12 PM.

"Ten minutes ago," Julian continued evenly, "while you were drinking my champagne at Table One, the DEA and the New Jersey State Police raided your three remaining chemical warehouses in Elizabeth—using the exact shipping ledger codes my Uncle Victor handed you last month. By midnight, every bank account, every tugboat, and every brick with the Morelli name on it belongs to the federal government... and the walk from my front door to the Lincoln Tunnel is six blocks long."

Knowing that walking out of Vane Tower tonight meant walking straight into either federal handcuffs or Dante’s waiting cleanup crews in the dark streets of Midtown—and knowing that his own four bodyguards had been disarmed at the lobby metal detectors—Uncle Victor Vance panicked completely.

For ten years, as the family’s sixty-year-old General Counsel with a titanium knee replacement, Victor had never been subjected to the electronic wand at the lobby entrance of his own family’s building!

And strapped inside the orthopedic brace of Victor’s left knee beneath his tuxedo trousers was a flat, two-shot .380 titanium derringer!

"If I don't leave this building alive, Julian, neither does your new queen!" Victor shrieked, lunging down to yank the tiny two-shot pistol from his ankle cuff and aiming it not up at the armored podium where Julian stood—but sideways toward the stage steps where Clara was walking down to hand the tablet to the federal clerk!
