Chapter 10 - Shadows of the Past

“Daniel!” I screamed.

Before Julian’s blade could pierce an inch, Daniel moved with lightning-fast, predatory reflexes. He sidestepped the frantic lunge, grabbed Julian’s wrist with iron force, and twisted it behind his back in one fluid, merciless motion.

Julian cried out in agony as the letter opener clattered loudly onto the polished mahogany table.

Daniel slammed his brother face-first against the podium, holding him securely while Marcus stepped up with a pair of steel handcuffs.

“You’re finished, Julian,” Daniel muttered into his brother's ear before shoving him roughly into the custody of the guards.

Two federal marshals stepped out from the private elevator annex at the back of the boardroom, flashing their badges and taking custody of a kicking, screaming Julian Sterling as they hauled him away in chains.

The grand boardroom remained dead silent. Fifty of the most powerful people in Boston sat paralyzed, watching the undisputed ruler of the city reclaim his throne in real-time.

Daniel straightened his suit jacket, smoothed his tie, and turned to face the assembly.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Daniel said, his voice steady and commanding. “The board meeting is adjourned. My associates will brief you on the restructuring of corporate oversight by tomorrow morning.”

As the investors hurriedly gathered their briefcases and filed out of the boardroom in stunned silence, the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind the last of them, leaving just Daniel, Marcus, the twins, and me in the massive, sunlit room.

Daniel exhaled a long, shuddering breath, the adrenaline finally fading as he pressed a hand against his bandaged side.

“Are you okay?” I asked, walking over to him, my heart still racing.

“I’ve been better,” Daniel admitted with a faint, weary smile. He looked down at the twins sleeping peacefully in my arms, then back up at me. “And I’ve never been more grateful.”

He reached out, his hand gently resting over mine on the baby carrier.

“You walked into the fire with me today, Anna,” Daniel said softly, his blue eyes searching my face with a depth of emotion that completely overwhelmed me. “You didn't have to. You could have walked away at any time.”

“I told you before,” I whispered, looking up into his eyes. “I know what it’s like to be hunted, to feel like nobody cares if you survive or disappear. I wasn't going to let them take your family. Not when I finally found one worth fighting for.”

May you like

Daniel pulled me close—careful of the babies nestled between us—and pressed his lips softly against my forehead.

“You are my family now, Anna,” he swore quietly. “And no one will ever lay a finger on you again.”
