Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

For four years, Lily Carter had trained herself not to imagine Derek coming back.

At first she had waited.

Then she had hated him.

Then she had stopped using emotional energy on either.

But staring at the photograph in her hand brought every unfinished feeling back at once.

Derek looked older.

Thinner.

His dark hair had turned gray near the temples.

But there was no question.

It was him.

“What hotel?” Lily whispered.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“The Langham.”

“When?”

“Saturday.”

Lily looked at Ethan.

“You know the woman with him?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“My CFO. Rachel Stone.”

Vanessa smiled without humor.

“And now things get interesting.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Why were you following Rachel?”

“I wasn’t.”

“Then who took the picture?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“My investigator.”

Lily laughed bitterly.

“Does everyone in your world investigate everyone?”

Nobody answered.

Vanessa continued.

“After our engagement ended, I wanted to know whether Ethan had already been seeing someone else.”

“I wasn’t.”

“I know that now. But my investigator saw you with Lily. Then he checked Lily.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You invaded her privacy.”

Vanessa lifted a brow.

“You’re criticizing me for that?”

Lily cut between them.

“Stop.”

Both turned.

“I don’t care which billionaire-adjacent person hired which investigator. I care why my ex-husband is standing beside the CFO of Ethan’s company.”

Ethan nodded.

“You’re right.”

He called Rachel immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Voicemail.

His face changed.

“Rachel never ignores me.”

Vanessa shrugged.

“She might now.”

Ethan called his security director.

“Find Rachel Stone. Quietly.”

Lily stared at him.

“Why quietly?”

“Because if this connects to Derek, I don’t want to scare anyone before we understand what’s happening.”

Vanessa looked pleased.

“Now you understand why I came.”

Ethan gave her a hard look.

“You could’ve emailed the photograph.”

“And miss this?”

Lily stepped closer.

“If you’re enjoying this, leave.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

She studied Lily for a moment.

Then unexpectedly nodded.

“You’re right.”

She returned to the Mercedes.

Before getting inside, she looked at Ethan.

“You always wanted someone who didn’t care about your money.”

Her eyes moved to Lily.

“Be careful you don’t destroy her trying to make sure.”

The car drove away.

Lily stared after it.

“I don’t like her.”

“Neither do I.”

“But she was right.”

“I know.”

The next morning, Rachel Stone arrived at Cole Meridian headquarters at 6:40 a.m.

Ethan was waiting in her office.

She froze.

“You’re early.”

“So are you.”

Rachel slowly set down her purse.

“What’s going on?”

Ethan placed the photograph on her desk.

Her face lost color.

“Who gave you this?”

“Who is Derek Carter?”

Rachel sat.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out like this.”

“Find out what?”

Rachel looked exhausted.

“Derek worked for Cole Meridian.”

Ethan stared.

“No.”

“Not directly. Through a subcontractor.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

Lily, standing near the door, felt the room tilt.

“What did he do?”

Rachel looked at her.

“Data systems.”

“My husband fixed office networks.”

“That’s what you thought.”

Lily’s expression changed.

Rachel continued carefully.

“Derek discovered unusual payments moving through a vendor account. He believed someone inside the company was stealing.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why have I never heard this?”

“Because your father was CEO then.”

Silence.

Ethan’s father, Charles Cole, had died three years earlier after a sudden heart attack.

Rachel swallowed.

“Derek reported the payments. Two weeks later, he disappeared.”

Lily stepped forward.

“You knew?”

“I knew after.”

“You knew my husband disappeared and didn’t tell me?”

“I didn’t know where he went.”

“But you knew why?”

“I suspected.”

Lily’s hands curled.

“I spent four years thinking he abandoned his daughters.”

Rachel looked down.

“He did leave.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“He left because someone threatened you.”

Lily went still.

Rachel opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a flash drive.

“Derek contacted me six months ago.”

Ethan stared.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“He didn’t trust you.”

“Why?”

“Because the payments led to someone with the last name Cole.”

Ethan’s face changed.

Rachel inserted the drive into her computer.

A spreadsheet appeared.

Millions transferred through shell vendors.

Five years of transactions.

Lily saw the total.

$41,700,000.

Ethan leaned toward the screen.

“Who authorized these?”

Rachel clicked another file.

Scanned signatures appeared.

CHARLES COLE.

Ethan’s father.

“No,” Ethan said.

Rachel looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

“My father built this company.”

“Yes.”

“He would never steal from it.”

Rachel’s voice remained gentle.

“I didn’t say he stole.”

“Then what?”

She opened another document.

Payments from the shell companies had eventually landed in an account belonging to a man named Victor Hale.

Ethan knew the name.

Everyone in Chicago business did.

Victor Hale had been Charles Cole’s oldest friend.

He had also served as chairman of Cole Meridian’s board for twenty-two years.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“Victor.”

Rachel nodded.

Lily’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A familiar voice spoke.

“Lily.”

Her knees nearly buckled.

Derek.

She gripped the desk.

“Where are you?”

“Don’t say anything. Just listen.”

“You have daughters who thought you were dead!”

“I know.”

“You abandoned us!”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

Then Derek whispered, “Victor knows Ethan found the files.”

Ethan stepped closer.

Derek continued.

“He has people watching you.”

Lily looked toward the glass office walls.

Employees moved normally outside.

Suddenly every stranger looked dangerous.

“Derek, tell me where you are.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because if Victor finds me before I give Ethan the original records, everything disappears.”

“What original records?”

“The ones proving Charles Cole wasn’t stealing.”

Ethan’s face tightened.

Derek continued.

“Charles was collecting evidence against Victor.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Then why is his signature on everything?” Lily asked.

“Forged.”

Silence.

Then Derek said something that changed the entire story.

“Lily, Victor didn’t just threaten me.”

“What?”

“He paid someone to make your mother’s medical insurance claim disappear.”

Lily went cold.

“What are you talking about?”

“Grace wasn’t supposed to lose coverage.”

Her hand began trembling.

Derek’s voice cracked.

“He did it to force me out of hiding.”

The room disappeared around Lily.

Her mother’s delayed treatments.

The rejected appeals.

The hospital bills.

The months of fear.

“Are you saying my mother died because of this?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you saying—”

The line went dead.

Lily screamed Derek’s name.

Nothing.

Ethan reached for her.

She stepped away.

“No.”

“Lily—”

She looked at him with tears running down her face.

“Your world came into my family before I ever met you.”

Ethan had no answer.

May you like

And for the first time, his six-billion-dollar empire looked less like something he owned.

It looked like the thing that had been quietly destroying her life.
