Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the LedgerThree days passed inside the brownstone on Oak Street.

During that time, Norah didn't try to escape. The initial panic had given way to something colder, sharper, and far more dangerous: clarity.
She sat at the massive oak desk in Dante’s study, surrounded by three dual-monitor screens, stacks of encrypted financial records, and a mug of black coffee that Mrs. Gable refreshed every two hours. She was doing what she did best—tearing numbers apart until they confessed their secrets.
The ledger in front of her belonged to Apex Global Logistics, one of Dante’s primary shipping fronts. On paper, it looked legitimate—importing textiles, machinery parts, and electronics from overseas. But as Norah cross-referenced the port entry logs with municipal tax filings, she found the discrepancy.
"Found you," she whispered, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard.
The door opened without a knock. Dante walked in, holding two takeout boxes of wood-fired pizza and a bottle of sparkling water. He had learned over the last seventy-two hours that when Norah was deep in a spreadsheet, she forgot to eat unless food was physically placed in front of her.
"Eat," Dante commanded, setting the box down right over a stack of offshore bank routing numbers.
Norah ignored the pizza. She spun her monitor around to face him.
"Look at this," she said, pointing a slender finger at a highlighted row of data. "Your previous financial controller wasn't just skimming six hundred thousand dollars. He was funneling it through a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called Meridian Holdings."
Dante stopped mid-movement. His dark eyes locked onto the screen. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.
"Meridian Holdings," Dante repeated, his voice dangerously low. "My uncle’s primary front for commercial real estate acquisition in the Midwest."
"Exactly," Norah nodded, a victorious, slightly manic gleam in her eyes. "And look who signed the secondary transfer authorization documents six months ago as an authorized regional agent."
She clicked a mouse button. A scanned PDF file popped up on the screen, displaying a digital signature above a printed name.
Cameron Davis.
Dante stared at the screen. The silence in the study was so heavy it felt like lead. Slowly, he straightened up, his shoulders tensing into rigid lines of pure, lethal predator focus.
"He wasn't just working for my uncle," Dante murmured, more to himself than to her. "He was laundering money through your family's bakery mortgage to clear regulatory hurdles for a new downtown casino project."
"They destroyed forty-three years of my family's history so your uncle could build a blackjack table," Norah said, her voice shaking with a cold fury that terrified even her. She looked up at Dante, her eyes burning with unshed tears. "You said stories like mine don't end in tragedy. Prove it."
Dante looked down at her. For a long, intense moment, the crime lord and the diner waitress stood on equal footing—two people united by a common enemy and a shared hunger for absolute destruction.
"What do you need?" Dante asked, his voice steady and absolute.
"I need access to the central server of Meridian Holdings," Norah said, her fingers curling into fists on the desk. "They think they deleted their local drives when the bakery closed, but financial transactions leave digital footprints that go three layers deep into cloud backups. If I can crack their encrypted tax servers, I can expose every illegal land grab, every bribe paid to city council members, and every cent Cameron stole from me and my family."
"And if you do?" Dante raised an eyebrow. "My uncle will know immediately who breached his firewall. It will start a war in the streets of Chicago."
"Let it burn," Norah said fiercely. "I'm done running, Dante. If I'm going to be tied to the Vance family, let's make sure we burn the right half of it to the ground."
A slow, terrifyingly beautiful smile spread across Dante’s face—the smile of a man who had finally found a queen worthy of his chessboard.
"Vincent!" Dante roared toward the hallway.

The heavy door banged open instantly. "Boss?"
"Get our best cyber-intelligence team on the secure line to the Oak Street study. And tell the strike teams to load their magazines." Dante looked back down at Norah, his gaze burning like dark fire. "We're going to go pay my uncle a visit."
