Chapter 11

The smoke cleared enough for me to see my mother’s face.

She held Noah against one shoulder.

With her other hand, she pressed a small remote.

A live video appeared on the boardroom screen.

Emily sat inside the apartment nursery.

Her hands were tied behind the rocking chair.

A man in a police uniform stood beside her.

A device with a blinking light rested beneath the crib.

Linda had not come alone.

“The officer’s name is Warren,” she whispered. “He has been helping us for years.”

Detective Torres heard her.

“Officer Warren?”

She recognized the name.

He worked in evidence control.

He had warned Linda about warrants.

He had allowed Dr. Price access to seized information.

He had helped her escape federal transport.

Linda lifted the remote.

“If I release this button, Warren activates the device.”

Emily stared into the camera.

She looked terrified but conscious.

“You planned this,” I said.

“I plan everything.”

“Except Dad’s archive.”

Her mouth tightened.

Mark crawled behind the server console.

Blood covered one side of his face from broken glass.

He still held his gun.

Agents surrounded the room but could not fire safely.

Sophie and Rachel remained beneath the table.

The gunman had been wounded.

Detective Torres ordered Linda to place Noah on the floor.

Linda laughed.

“You think I trust police?”

“You are surrounded.”

“So is Emily.”

The clock showed six minutes.

Mark moved toward the infant scanner.

Linda saw him.

“Stay back.”

“We have no time.”

“You lost your right to command me.”

“You never had the courage to finish anything alone.”

Linda pointed the remote toward him.

“This could activate more than one device.”

Mark froze.

Their alliance was gone.

For decades, they protected each other because exposure threatened both.

Now the money, archive, and criminal evidence had turned them into enemies.

I kept my eyes on Noah.

His face was red from crying.

He was only twenty-nine days old.

He knew nothing about trusts or bloodlines.

He only knew he was away from the arms that made him feel safe.

“Mom,” I said.

Linda looked at me.

The old word still affected her.

“You don’t want Mark to win.”

“No.”

“Then give Noah to me.”

“So you can release the archive?”

“The archive releases on its own.”

“And destroys everything.”

“It destroys what you stole.”

“It destroys the Carter name.”

“No. It tells the truth about it.”

She shook her head.

“You sound like Robert.”

“You loved him once.”

“I loved who he was before guilt made him weak.”

“He felt guilty because people were hurt.”

“He wanted to give the company away.”

“He wanted to repay them.”

“With my life.”

“You had choices.”

“No woman has choices when men control the money.”

The bitterness in her voice was real.

It did not excuse anything.

But I saw part of the person beneath the monster.

Linda married into a powerful family that never treated her as equal.

She responded by learning to control its weakest members.

She became the thing she hated.

“You could have left,” I said.

“And become what? The divorced wife everyone whispered about?”

“You chose status.”

“I chose survival.”

“You drugged your daughter.”

“She was destroying us.”

“You stole her baby.”

“She was not capable of raising him.”

“You tortured Emily.”

“I was preparing evidence.”

“You poisoned Noah.”

Her eyes moved toward him.

“That was Price.”

“You put it in the formula.”

“I did what was necessary.”

There was no path back.

No hidden heart waiting to be reached.

Only decisions she kept renaming.

The clock showed four minutes.

Detective Torres’s phone vibrated.

A tactical team had reached the apartment building.

They could not enter the nursery because Officer Warren had barricaded the door.

The device beneath the crib appeared to be wired to the doorframe.

The bomb team needed time.

Linda watched Torres’s face.

“They won’t save her before midnight.”

“Midnight has nothing to do with the device,” I said.

“No. But it has everything to do with Noah.”

Mark suddenly fired toward the ceiling sprinklers.

Water exploded across the room.

Agents ducked.

He lunged for Linda.

I tackled him before he reached Noah.

We hit the floor.

The gun slid beneath the table.

Mark punched my injured head.

Pain flashed behind my eyes.

He reached toward the infant scanner.

I grabbed his ankle.

He kicked my face.

Linda ran toward the exit.

Detective Torres blocked her.

Linda lifted the remote.

“Move.”

“No.”

“I will kill Emily.”

Torres lowered her weapon.

Linda stepped closer.

Then Noah reached out and grabbed the silver chain around her neck.

The small key hanging from it caught between his fingers.

Linda looked down.

For a second, her expression changed.

He reminded her of me as a baby.

Or perhaps of Ethan.

Or of every child she had ever believed she could own.

That second was enough.

Emily’s voice blasted through the video feed.

“Daniel, don’t let her use me!”

She kicked the nursery lamp.

It struck Officer Warren’s knee.

He fell.

Emily threw herself sideways with the chair.

The remote receiver beneath the crib disconnected from the wall.

A tactical officer crashed through the nursery window from the neighboring balcony.

The video spun.

Warren reached for his gun.

The officer tackled him.

Torres received confirmation through her earpiece.

“Emily is secure.”

Linda stared at the screen.

Her leverage was gone.

Torres grabbed her wrist.

The remote fell.

I pulled Noah from her arms.

He pressed his face against my neck.

I held him so tightly that an agent warned me to be careful.

Mark crawled toward the infant scanner.

Rachel kicked the device from the table.

It shattered on the floor.

The clock showed one minute.

The server announced:

SUCCESSOR OVERRIDE FAILED.

ROBERT CARTER ARCHIVE RELEASE IN SIXTY SECONDS.

Mark pointed his gun at the server.

“If I destroy the system, nothing releases.”

Rachel stepped in front of it.

He aimed at her chest.

Sophie screamed.

I handed Noah to Torres and ran toward Mark.

The gun fired.

Rachel fell.

I slammed Mark against the console.

The weapon dropped.

Agents restrained him.

Sophie crawled toward her mother.

Blood stained Rachel’s blouse near her shoulder.

She was breathing.

A medic pressed gauze against the wound.

The server counted down.

Ten.

Nine.

Linda sat handcuffed beside the wall.

She watched the screen.

Eight.

Seven.

Mark screamed that the files were stolen.

Six.

Five.

Noah cried in Torres’s arms.

Four.

Three.

The boardroom lights flickered.

Two.

One.

The screen went black.

For one terrible second, nothing happened.

Then phones began vibrating across the room.

Rachel’s phone.

Torres’s.

The agents’.

Mine.

The archive had been sent.

Federal prosecutors.

State investigators.

News organizations.

Rosewood survivors.

Trust beneficiaries.

Every person my father had named.

Documents appeared online faster than anyone could remove them.

Videos.

Financial ledgers.

Birth records.

My father’s recordings.

Linda’s voice ordering the brake sabotage.

Price describing the medication used on Claire.

Harland discussing Ethan’s transfer.

Mark moving trust money.

The truth no longer belonged to one judge, one detective, or one frightened family.

Linda stared at the alerts.

Her face emptied.

Then the boardroom speakers activated.

My father’s recorded voice filled the room.

“My name is Robert Carter. If this message is public, my family failed to stop the truth, but the truth survived us.”

May you like

Linda closed her eyes.

For the first time, she looked defeated.
